I am on my third d300, I Have 32 spline shafts front and rear, but just took out another low gear set, (stock)! The first case was my own fault, I did not have the limit strap on and got carried away, second case twisted the rear output shaft of, so upgraded those, 3rd case is the low range. I have seen quite a few of the bouncer rigs that are still running 300s How are you guys makeing them live??

Oh yea the rig is 3950LBS with a bone stock 305 and 43sxs. Ive seen rigs with way more power beat the daylights out of them and not break.

I've always wondered the same. I've stripped the gears out on one also and I wasn't beating on it nearly as hard as some of these guys do theirs. Maybe the tick is to just keep the tires off the ground so that they can't get any traction? :)

Don't run Tera low gears. Only use JB conversion gears and parts as they are far superior.

Heath, can you switch to a 205 without too much trouble and redoing everything? I know that gives you less gearing than a 205, but they're stronger.

Or, stay off the skinny pedal laughing1

im not running a 4 to 1 kit the gears are stock, I am running a 208 doubler infront of the 300, I think that is what broke the gears this past weekend. Thinking about a 4to 1 and doing away with the doubler. Problem is Jb is out until december.

I dont think A 205 will fit without lots of rework.

and Ive got a 383 to fix the skinny pedal problem :eat: ;D

I have Jay Robert BackYard Fab Yellow single seater now, it has a 406, 350 turbo and D300 with 513 gears and cut turfs back cut TSL's front. He broke 3 cases and come to find out the cases were knocking themselves out of gear just enough to eat the gears up during a climb. To fix the problem the shifters were removed and the shift rods welded in low range, as of today it has not broken again, it might on next ride but is working now. :driving:

A dana 300 is a boat anchor!! They have no place behind a v8 I had a cab truck with a mild 302 4spd and a 300 I broke 3 sets of stock gears one set 4:1's in 15 min Tera low set! Went back stock and broke the case in half at the shifters ! Garbage all I got to say! Go for the atlas and be done with it!
I was running 4.56 gears and 39.5 boggers Dana 60 14b front had spicer shafts and joints!

I just bought a D300 on monday :'(

But it's going in a 4cyl toyota buggy, so I figure it will live a long happy life thumb.gif

May be something to that...

i had the doubler in when it broke this last time, trying to find a gear with some speed and enough power to still pull.
i really think that helped break the case. dont have funds for an atlas so got to stay with the 300.
may have to try the shifter issue, because it will jump put of gear going down hill

I'm putting mine behind a Toyota doubler. Been thinking about using 4.7 gears in the doubler to give me a LOW crawl ratio, but I'm kind of afraid feeding the D300 with a 4.7 reduction box.

I would remove the access plate and built a new thick one to help reduce any case flex. < that plus keeping it in gear and the previously mentioned upgrades may be a good as it gets without a Stak replace-a-case. Mine is holding behind a 231 doubler....but I drive like a puss.

I think the thick/solid plate will help a lot.

I'm gonna do that on mine. Probably mill some gear reliefs out in some 3/4-1/2" thick plate.

I broke a front output like it was nothing. Just going up a hill. Went back to a trusty 205...maybe Atlas is in the future ...no more Dana 300 for me...my 2 shinny pennies

This is what I have - 4.7s feeding a D300. I had Toy cases with 2.28s to 4.7s and didn't wanna lose all that low low. However, I do mainly technical rocks and not so much horsepower stuff. If your terrain is lose and you don't use double low often, you may be better off just doing 2.28s to D300.

i would have thought toy cases were just as strong as a D300.....i guess the outputs are weaker on the yota's?

nah, they are about the same 27 spline (toyota) vs 26 spline (D300). Toyota rear output has a groove at the front drive gear that is a known weak spot.

D300 is a little more compact, 4" shorter, and easily clockable (for buggy use), and is front-dig capable. D300 is already 23 spline input (larger than toyota), and the AA Toyota case-D300 adapter is basically the same price as the Marlin Crawler R10 10 degree rotated toyota doubler.

Also, out put upgrades cost basically the same (if needed) but D300 upgrades to 32 spline instead of 30 spline.

^those are the reasons I got a D300 to go in my next buggy.

IIRC, the D300 outputs are a little bigger at the splines than Toyota. I think I remember putting a D300 output flange over a stock Toyota output but couldn't go the other way around when I was building my Toy / D300 doubler.

The D300 is a cool transfer case for a Toyota for all the reasons TBItoy mentioned. I was able to find a used OTT Industries adapter, which is a little nicer than the Advance Adapters unit.
