So i have been thinkin about welding up my d44 under my 3/4 ton chev on 38s. If I am wheelin smart and not rompin at full lock do you think i will grenade it?

What he said. 38's and a D44 is not a good combo. Expcially under a heavy full-size.

The open diff you have has probably saved that front end so far.

Do it if you want, but invest in some spare parts. Plus welded front diffs bring the suck. There's a couple Detroit's on CL, grab one. Or aussie locker so you don't have re-set up gears. You'll probably still :nuke: parts, but its better than welded.

who cares if it breaks? You will hate steering it so much you will look for reasons not to wheel.:booo:

Welded fronts bring the SUCK.:puke:

Weld the rear, they kick ass.:awesomework:

I personaly don't mind the handling of a welded front end. I wheel every weekend with mine, good option if money is tight. It will break with a D44 though. My buddy has chromoly shafts in his 44 with 38's and a locker and it breaks shafts more often than not. Carefull driving style would

Have you ever had a front detroit?:corn:

I personally dont mind the handling of a detrioted front:beer:

I ran 36 tsl's on a d44 with a detroit in the front of my K5 for years and never broke... More than a few times I had the front bouncing... :fawkdancesmiley:

Stay off the skinny pedal at full lock, don't drive it like it's stolen and carry extra parts...

Oh yeah, make sure you carry the correct socket for it...:awesomework:

Ya I have Detroits in my sami and their great! I would prefer a Detroit as well but the cost prevented me during my Toyota build. Most well expierenced wheelers would say No to a welded front but i drive my truck like a savage so it seems to work for me. It did give me Popeye forearms though. Anybody want to play Mersey?

Weld it, tack weld the u-joint caps in the shafts, make sure when re-installing the shafts to align the trunions in the joints the same way, carry spare shafts...

OR spend some money on some chromo shafts.

And most importantly... install hydro assist. You won't be able to steer without it when the hubs are locked in.

Or better yet take a mill/grinder to the yokes and put full snap rings on the caps. Easier to remove and you don't have to worry about the heat damaging the needle bearings

ha nope just power steering. It turns like a dream now so i assume it wont get to bad

It will, trust me. You're going to hate it unless you run hydro assist or full hydro. Think about getting out to unlock a hub every time you need to make a sharp turn on the trail. Shitty. Not only that, but it's very hard on power steering pumps, you will overheat the power steering fluid fast.

just weld up that turd and tell us how you like it.

seems to me you had your mind made up before posting this Q?

Go ahead and learn from experience, I did. I welded up the front on my old chev on 40s. guesse what? I pulled it out the next day.:puke:

if you think its no big deal, then do it.:corn:
