so is this a viable plan? if i got these axles for a lot cheaper than what they're listed at (got a source for cheaper w/ free shipping right now)

I have a '91 YJ dana 30, it says at the bottom of the ad that they're for a TJ with the 30 spline carrier. if i were to acquire the carrier out of said TJ would it just go in the axle I have now?, given that they are both RR. is there a carrier break on the carrier like the YJ carrier? I;m just brainstorming, cus with a 10 year warranty that's pretty good.:awesomework:

The 30 spline is for an ARB carrier. I dont htink any TJ came with 30 spline, except maybe a Rubi, but even then I'm unsure.

But if you find a 30 spline carrier it should be a direct swap.

then slam some 30 spline longfield's into it.....bombproof:stirpot:

I know nothing about longfields other than the toyota association....Is that do-able.... This is the route I've been wanting to go with my CJ D30....... Upgrade the ARB and use 30 spline axles.....

there have to be 30 spline TJs, other wise they would say that it's only for the ARB carrier... i had an ARB carrier, but it was 27 spline...hmm, wonder if there is a cost difference between the two...

the new style D30 ARB carrier (last two? years or so) can be had in 27 or 30 spline...same carrier- different side gears. I don't know of any TJ's other than maybe a rubicon that came with 30 splines....and then you have a 44 if it's a rubi...

Dana 30's never came with 30 spline axles. The 30 spline axles are aftermarket only and lockers are available from a couple of different MFG's. I personally would only CONSIDER this with a YJ, TJ or XJ. The housings were upgraded after the CJ and the flex issue was minimized. CJ's are notorious for chipping a tooth off of the ring gear when the center section flexes. Ask me how I know:mad:

The 91 YJ came witha decent HP 30. It's worth considering going to a better axle and getting rid of that damn axle disconnect. If you don't want to spend the big bucks for the 30 sp kit, consider TJ Cromo shafts and a new right side axle seal. This gives you a very strong shaft, no disconnect and a is much cheaper than getting a new carrier. Or, do nothing and save for a 44.

ya, i upgraded to the one piece (i have the '91 YJ axle) i was just thinking cus i saw it, i'm not truly wanting to polish the turd much more, just maintain it, since the LUV is needing the attention:D . It just made me think since it said something at the bottom about a TJ having a 30 spline, or something suggesting that's what to put it in... I'm going through right now and replacing the ball joints and now the u-joints in the axles, and i didn't realize that the now "new" longside shaft has a larger/different u-joint in it...what size is it? I thought the other one i had in the short side was a 297x, but i'm beginning to think this larger one is the 297x and the smaller one on the short side is a 260 joint, is this correct? i just always thought i had the 297x in there already...:eeek:

a 91 yj stock short side will have the smaller 260x joint. 297x is bigger and can be found in post 95 jeep D30s. They are commonly referred to as "TJ" shafts...

hmm, maybe i got my info backwards then... i thought the guy who sold me the axles said it was a CJ shaft... although that could have been about the short side i picked up with it... meh, no worries. now i guess i have another question.. on the unit bearings i;ve found two different styles, on the one i have, the mounting surface distance between the WMS and the face it mounts to on the knuckle is like 2.5" we'll say, and on another one i picked up off a cherokee (unknowing of this problem at the time) is like 2" or so... so when i tried to install my rotor it was up against the knuckle, so what years/styles were what? silly jeeps:looser:

The thicker one is an older unit bearing and will only work with the older knuckle and brake setup. The shafts are the same. Your 91 was the change over year and it could be either way. IIRC. Post a picture of the knuckle

(most recent readily available photo i have):redneck:
i'm pretty sure i have the "taller" style...

ok, so i just asked someone and they said that before 1990 they were a different size... so i'm to assume that the other ones i got at PAP that didn't work, must have been off of an older cherokee than 1990....

but other than that, they can adapt from cherokee to YJ and so forth so long as they are newer than 1990???
