dana70 ???

Scrap it and buy a14b. Even the 35 spline chromoly yukon shafts will break in a 70 :****:. Pinion is almost identicle to a lp 60 also. Parts are more expensive for the 70 than 14. Hell a 70 cover is the same as a 60. The list goes on and on.

da** figured it would be stronger but I'd rather put money in something that's worth it. If anybody got a 14 boilt or needs a complete 70 give me shout

X2 I broke several 70 axles before going to a 14 bolt

the axle he got has basturd axles anyway its got 35 spline shafts and 14 bolt hubs :****:

What motor and tire size will you be running with the dana 70? I have seen a few 70s take a beating and never check up. :dblthumb:

So basically the 70 ain't worth fooling with.
It depends. I got a 70 35 spline in the back of mine. 4550 lbs, 44s, and a stock 350. All I have broken is a yukon shaft but I'm regearing it now and all the stuff is the same as a lp 60. I'm rough on **** though. Ring gear a little bigger and inner pinion bearing area is a little bigger but they even use the same pinion seals. If it wasn't already under my buggy i wouldn't buy one. 14 bolt is MUCH stronger and you can grab some stock shafts for trail spares.

Sounds like you may have an HD70. If so it has the big pinion bearing like an 80, has big axle tubes, and is wider than normal. You can keep the dually front hubs and run cheap, stock H1 double beadlocks to get narrow again. It is also possible to put Dana 80 gears in it al la Jana 87. Don't know if you want to mess with any / all of that but the axle is not "trash."

If you've already machined / swapped your front hubs and are just going for cheap strength then the 14 bolt is probably your best choice. If you haven't machined / swapped your front hubs yet you should consider the cheap H1's and running it as it is. Few can break the pinion shaft or 35-spline axles and if you someday did and wanted to do the Jana 87 you would arguably be stronger than a 14-bolt at that point and would still have cheap double beadlocks that could be replaced easily if you bent one.

Are your running 4340 35 spline shafts? They make a 35 spline shaft that is just a factory replacement and i have seen those break but a true 4340 shaft will take a serious beat down.

Was putting them under Toyota. 42in tire at the biggest an right now its just a stock 70 but wanted run disk brake chromoly inners really gear locker the usally stuff

I talked to Carl Jantz about the 87 kit.

It's way more involved than the 76 kit and requires a significant amount of machine work to the carrier, housing, and even the ring gear.

I was mildly concerned about the steering 70 that I have for the rear of my buggy, I guess I will run it and see what happens. Stock v8 and 39.5" shouldn't put too much stress on it hopefully.

If it does break, I'll build a shaved 14b steer axle.

Ah hell if you are still running a 4cyl, I'd run the 70 and gear it 6.17 or 7.17 to take as much stress off the cases as possible.

It depends on which 70 you are talking about. The 70HD is the easiest one to do it with because it is practically a Dana 80 to start with. I spoke at length with him, even helped him do some of the research, back before he first even thought about doing it. It was a long time ago and I don't recall all the specifics, but I think he was able to get the 80 gears into the 70HD housing with just some minimal machine work on the snout of the housing and a high ratio 70HD carrier. The other 70's DO require a lot more work IIRC though.

But hell, if its just going in a Toyota run it the way it is. My brother beat the snot out of his 70HD rear in his Toyota buggy. He could not phase that rear end with stock shafts.

Gotcha, I missed the fact that you were stipulating the 87 kit on the OP's 70 being an HD.

Mine is a 70B (the most common I believe)

Carry on.

Yes. He said its a Chevy dually 70. I don't believe that Chevy ever used a non-HD 70 in the rear of any of their duallies and the fact that it is 35-spline reinforces the idear of it being an HD. I agree though, carry on. :)

What other spline do 70s come in?

I've seen the coarse 23? spline, but it was big like 1.5". Did they come with small shafts like a 60?

Yes, there are 30-spline 70's. I thought they were the most common ...

Hmm. Never seen one of them. (my current one and the other 70s I've owned and sold were all 1.5" 35 spline)

Weird :drinkers:

I got a 70u. Its 35 spline. Hell if any of yall need a 5.86 gear for a 70 I'm about to pull it out. Its not in bad shape just got tired of breakin the front 60 so goin with 4.56.
