I have a 69 cj5,225 v6, I would like to know how to set-up dual batteries. Do the batteries have to be the same? I would like to set them up for running on one battery, and add the second for winching. Is there special needs that I should get to hook this up? I would like the two batteries to be charging at the same time. Also wiring, is there special wires that I need?

You can do that but I recomend useing a battery isolater so if you kill one battery winching you can still strart your rig back up, also most isolators come with wireing instructions. I would recomend probably 2 guage or thicker wires.

Hook them up parallel. pos to pos neg to eng block neg to frame.

i have been running this way for 5 years with not a single problem, winching has never been a problem, even 7 consecutive 100 ft pulls! with just regular ol napa batterys. i also use o gauge welding cable.

Its best if the batts are both new and the same size and type. If you leave them both "on" all of the time the weaker one will draw down the other then back and forth. I use a winch syl, to tie mine together for charging and if I need the extra juice for the winch or for the starter. The winch syl. is controlled by a switch on the dash. Real simple and worked just fine for years in my cj.

Check out billavista's write up on pirate 4x4 in the tech section on dual batery set up, I was going to do that on my yj a while back ago, he really breaks it down barney style step by step and what isolators to use and wiring diagrams, if you can't find ill post up the link when I get to my computer later tonight

can you post the link im also interested in doing this

I've been running with the batteries tied together 100% of the time for a long time now. (pushing 10 years) Never killed a set unless I did a dumbass thing and left an accessory on for a long time.

IMHO, It's a simpler approach with less things to break.

Cabling, I use 00 to tie the batteries together, even though the cable is no longer than 6-8". But I also use 00 going to the winch, 2ga going to the frame and starter, and 2ga for the solenoids to the winch motor. (all welding cable)
