Details: 1990 ford F-350, 460, E4OD.
I get a really hard shift when going from 1st to 2nd, especially when going up hills. If I predict when it will shift, and let out of the throttle a bit it seems to shift much easier.
I just finished tuning up the motor and it runs great now, no codes in the PCM, and after researching it, I don't believe it's a high line pressure problem, because the overdrive light never blinks to indicate a code in the TCM and a switch to high pressure. Other than this rough shift, the transmission shifts fine and doesn't slip and behaves pretty normally.
A co-worker who used to have a '92 with the E4OD was saying that he had this problem and there was a "Transmission assist" fuse that was blown... I looked and have no such fuse, and no fuses blown anyway.
After some googling, it's been suggested that it could either be a solenoid problem, or a problem with the gear positioning sensor on the side of the tranny? Still others suggest a fluid and filter change as the solution to the problem.
Anyone have any experience with this? I think I will start by changing the fluid and filter, since it probably needs to be done anyway. Any other ideas if that doesn't fix it?
