Is there a way to change out my first gear in my tranny to a lower ratio? I have driven a few peoples rigs that had a 6.5+ to 1 ratio and I really liked them.

Is there a way to pop my 1st gear off and put a lower ratio on one.

I have an AX-5.

Well, I dunno about that tranny in partular, but changing the "first" gear will require a different counter shaft to match. You're not talking about a trivial change...

t case gears.

Bah, that has nothing to do with it. I could get a klune V underdrive too. But I was wondering if there was a simple fix to just change out the first gear.

And when I say simple, I mean for that to be taken lightly.

You got a AX5 in that thing? Is it a 4 banger??

I dont think there's anywhere to buy a diff raito gear for it. Maybe a machine shop could build one for you, but it would still be a bitch to do. I'd go Klune or t-case.

I think you should rip out your case AND tranny and replace them with something real. Something like a Dana 300 and, say, a T18, or an SM465, or an NV4500 or something. Then you'll never complain about "first" gear again :D

four to one. :;

it has worked for years now. :D

Just do a 231 doubler from D&D Machine and push the rear end back a few inches. Need help?? :D :clappy: :redneck:

I am going to do an atlas t-case eventually. But herein lies the problem. I have driven a few rigs with low first gear and it rocked. GaryTJ's Jeep for instance, in T-case low (atlas 4:3) and 1st gear, it's stupid low. That's what I am looking for. Tom baker has a 2.7:1 Ratio in his dana 300, but because of his first gear (and motor) you can idle up a telephone pole with no problems.

Would it be more cost effective to get a new first gear machined, or would it be better to get an atlas (or 231 4:1 T-case) and an underdrive box? Personally If I am going to throw money at a t-case it better be gear driven.

If I went with the underdrive, I would have to move my rear axle further back, thus moving the gas tank, and cutting the frame rails. All of this is do-able, I just had the hopes and dreams of keeping it street legal and "daily driveable"

Glen nailed it....

What makes you think that the AX series would handle the increased torque created by such a low gear?

What you are looking for is what can only be found in an NV4500.

Low 1st gear but with a 5th gear OD for daily driving.

And how much would the adapter cost to strap that to my 4cyl? Also, how much longer or shorter is it than my current transmission?

Check with Advanced Adapters, Novac and JB Conversions.

I don't think there is so much of a length issue as there is a height issue. You wouold have to instal a body lift or cut out the floor most likely.

Already got that covered :;

The NV4500 is shorter than your ax5 but it is not cheap.
If I were you, I would go with the np231 doubler kit and have it all for a lot less money. If you have to there is lots of room to move the motor forwards to keep drivelines the same length.

very easy, just not cheap. The transmission is expensive and the adapters are too. Also the transmission is huge, you will need a body lift or rebuild the floorboards.

also They REQUIRE synthetic gear oil, and at over a gallon to fill that is expensive by itself. And, at 180 dry weight, they are not easy to manhandle in.

But on the good side, they are extremely strong and have the gears that you need.
