Just thought I would share my story of how crappy Frigidaire appliances should anyone be thinking of getting some. I built my house in August-2002. The builder was friends with someone at Handy TV & Appliance and was getting good deals through them on Frigidaire appliances (should have been my first clue). Anyway, so I get the house built, all new black appliances, all matching series, basically I am thinking no worries for a while on any of this....well last fast forward to 2 years ago. There I am in the kitchen fixin me a lil popcorn snack in the microwave. I was just standing there listening to the pops to make sure I didn't burn it, then I hear some strange noises that doesn't sound like popcorn popping....so as I turn and look, there is smoke and flames all inside where my popcorn is as well as coming out the vents of the top of the microwave. I quickly grabbed a towel and opened the door to shut if off, and poof no more fire and just a bit of smoke still lingering. So here I am standing in my kitchen looking at my popcorn thinking WTF was that all about. Grabbed the popcorn out and gave her the ole sniff test, eh...still smells alright, dumped it in a bowl and sat it to the side. Still amazed at all the pretty lights my microwave made earlier I shut the door and yes....I proceeded to turn it back on, only to rule out that my popcorn wasn't the culprit, cuz I still wanted to eat it. Set it for 10 secs....it made it to 4 and poof...she was dead. That's appliance number one 4 year old microwave...Replaced it with a Whirlpool...Now last year, I always turn the dishwasher on when I leave for work that way when I get home stuffs clean...anyway, I turn it on go to work, come back home and its still running on the rinse cycle. Call the repair man, he comes out, of course what I thought it was bad timer...he ordered the part for me, and I replaced it myself...worked fine for 3-4 months, then the same thing, bad timer. Now instead of putting another one in their at $40 a pop, I decide lets just replace it, and get a whirl pool as well. Besides the timer it would leak water around the door...Now onto present day...Walk into the kitchen yesterday and step in a big puddle of water, thats right now the fridge has died and all my ice in the freezer was leaking out. Just had a repair guy come out to check it, and the compressor is overheating and won't kick on. He said he see's tons of Frigidaire's like mine with the problem. Cost would be $500-$600 for parts and labor...F that...I guess now I get to spend some coin on a new Whirlpool fridge....Now after 6 years, I have replaced one microwave, dishwasher, and now a fridge. The only thing left is the stove, and the only reason it still works, is because it never gets used......Ok my crappy luck story is over...just don't buy Frigidaire crap...BTW...I called them, and they basically said that they were old and out of warranty and due to be replaced....I just said a few choice words and hung up on them and wrote a nasty letter to the corporate office about their crappy stuff...

Sorry to hear it but MANY of the new Appliances ain't what they used to be.

We are on our THIRD GE profile side by side and spent more than 6 weeks without a fridge waiting for parts until I demanded a new one.

Our less than 3 months old HIGH DOLLAR Kenmore dryer bit the dust and needed a motherboard... wtf a dryer needs with a motherboard is beyond me but we spent 3 weeks drying our stuff on a clothesline waiting for parts.

Im gonna side with Jerry on this one....

PS...... my house came with the same black fridgidaire **** Im certain your complaining about too laughing1

Yeah the old man that came out was super nice and didn't charge me for the visit either since I was on his way home. He said todays appliances are designed to last just long enough to get out of that extended warranty they want you to buy all the time. I bought one, it was for 5 years, and an extra $150 all parts and labor. What they don't tell you is that its not 5 extra years, its a supplement for the 1st year to your manufacturers warranty, then only 4 years after that is it a standalone warranty. Not all are that way, but most are. He told me if they are bad from the factory, they will die in the first year, if they make through that, then todays stuff is only made to outlast the other warranty's that you supplement....I guess they were making them too good and realized if they make them with a limited life span then they can sell more...I even found on Frigidaire's website something that said if your fridge was made before 1995 IIRC that they were designed with larger motors and compressors that were basically overkill, so they went to smaller cheaper ones...and I guess ones that don't last as long....oh well, I just dropped 1K on a Whirlpool to be delivered soon I hope....The old man said those he hardly ever gets calls on, Frigidaire, then Kenmore he gets the most calls on...

What is it with microwaves and popcorn!!! That same thing happened at my in-laws house in mississippi this weekend when we went to visit. had to air out the entire house for over an hour. got so hot it shattered the glass tray in the bottom of the microwave.

FWIW....

i have had frigidaire appliances al my life....growing up and so on...i have a stainless series refridgerator and dishwasher right now....they are nothing short of great....

i understand your sentiment......as above, i have seen GE profile stuff take a dump in my parent's house recently....jenn air and the like too....

they are NOT what they used to be....they are putting smaller condensers/compressors in the fridges and **** just aint as cold as it used to be......i can't get my sodas to ice up like i used to....

i know that setting them on the coldest setting is not the best b/c it can over work the unit and make it freeze up....so it's close, not frozen.....just doesn't cut it...i have had better luck with the cheapo units in rental apartments that kicked the expensive fridge's ass....

oh well...

After so many visits from the repairman I asked him straight up what to buy next time.

He said Maytag & Whirlpool have the fewest repair calls thumb.gif

My Maytag washer and dryer were junk as well. I do like Whirlpool though.
