The Dakar Rally, set to take place between January 5-20, was abruptly cancelled due to direct threats made against the event by "terrorist organizations."
While stages of the Dakar have been cancelled in the past due to various issues, this was the first time that the 30-year-old rally, one of the biggest competitions in automobile racing, has been called off. About 550 competitors were scheduled to start the 16-day, 5,760-mile trek through emote and hostile dunes and scrub from Europe to Senegal in West Africa.
How this cancellation will affect the companies, organizations and countries involved in the race is still unknown but the potential loss can be tremendous.
