My step Dad's ranger started turning the alternator light on, so he replaced the alternator with his spare. Now it's turning the light on above idle. He did the pull the positive cable while running test, and the motor sputters but doesn't die. Now the ****ed up part, the windshield wipers go on high by themselves when you pull the positive cable... :eeek:

I started going through the harness and found the main power wire from the solenoid to the ignition switch had melted down and was wrapped with tape by the previous owner... :shaking:  Replaced it. Found some other fuseable links that had been replaced. Ripped lots of retarded stereo wiring out. Though we were good to go, same issue.

He's gonna have the alternator tested today.

**** previous owners who butcher wiring in the ass with a hot poker.

Any other ideas?

I've seen grounds do some strange things...Check for corrosion...

Any chance you don't have an adequate ground from the motor to the frame, body to frame, and to the battery?

Pulling the pos. cable while running is NOT something you want to do on today's vehicles...can cause voltage spikes that'll take out computers and such (think of the battery as one huge capacitor soaking up the small variations in voltage...); ....sounds to me alot like you do have a bad alternator, but you apparently had wiring issues that needed attention; and I agree that checking your grounds is a good thing...
