I just got a call from a gentleman who wants gears done in his drag truck.

I've done plenty of R&P installs in all flavors of wheeling rigs from big to small without a single complaint or issue.

However, this vehicle will be a drag race vehicle with little to no break in.

Any tips or tricks?

He wants a detroit in a 12 bolt rear end. Not sure the ratio, but he's running about 450HP.

Just worried that I will do an install and it will fail due to no break in time.

1/8th mile or 1/4 mile??

Probably go with 4.56's (1/4 mile) depends on the tire size too. Its a lot like our sport. My Dad ran 1/8th and I believe his were 5.39's???

his gear's with that power will never see the type of abuse a gearset in our world will see, just set them up like you would in any other rig, but I usually try to set up right at the minimum spec on backlash. A drag car's gear's are loaded in staging and for the most part stay loaded through the whole pass. There is no shock loading like in off road.

Trans brake, foot brake, or man trans? He'll probably want a set of "racing" gears that are a little softer and take the shock load of a launch better.

If he's using a trans brake, as stated above, the gears will pretty much be loaded and won't get the shock load a manual trans car would have.

Detroit? Is it a street/strip car then? if it's only a drag car, then spool it.

Use 9310 alloy racing gears. Normal gears won't take the shock loads and they crumble.
