I am looking to retire my extension cord before fall hits and need some advice on glow plugs. I have read that some swell, die premature deaths and some are just overpriced. I could care less about what brand or cost (to a point), just want plugs that I can count on when it hits single digits this winter. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated before I throw a dart and just replace them with what's available.

For some reason I thought that the goo Roo on here was saying that you need to put some different pools injectors in and it fires right up at, glow plugs did not do all of what you needed. That is from a foggy memory

100% correct. I put 8 motocraft glowplugs and did the stancor relay mod. Still was terrible.

If I remember correctly, the injector o rings are the culprit. I just decided to do single shots.

Motorcraft zd-11 plugs ONLY

BUT don't just replace em, TEST em... Remove and apply 12v... If they glow they are just as good as new...

Problem can be in PCM, wiring from PCM to relay, relay, wiring from relay to uvch's, uvch's, or glow plugs...

Throwing parts at it without testing is foolish

The uvch's (under valve cover harnesses) are another part to get ONLY oem, tho there are several companies such as dieselorings.com or riff raff that can get em cheaper for you.

Plugs have 278k on them.....I will get a picture of them in a bit. Went with motorcraft zd11.

Any better? My OBS hated cold starts but it always would after a few attempts. Replace bad GP's, the relay if bad, maybe some Archoil for any possible stiction, and injector O rings and it should fire up with no problems.

If you haven't already done the job. A nice trick is to break them loose with a socket, then wedge a piece of hose onto the end of the plug and twist them out by hand. The socket will wedge when you are taking them out if not. 5-40 synthetic and a DB electric starter will do wonders for a 7.3 starting in the winter. Here are two of mine in some cold temps from last winter.

Is that a super duty thing? I read it was suggested for the obs, but when I did mine I was able to fully unthread with the socket and extension then use needlenose to grab them.

Mine made it to 250k. You could tell they were long overdue when I pulled them.

Not sure about the obs as I have never done one on one. I would assume they are the same. The plugs I pulled out would not be threaded all the way out before my socket bottomed out :dunno:

I had "cold" start issues and she didn't want to start without being plugged in. Changed oil and added the Hot Shots Stiction Eliminator stuff and it cured that issue.
I've since replaced injectors with single shots and never changed the glow plugs. Starts like a champ still.

Just another insight.

I can't count how many gp's I've changed and never had that issue on OBS or SD trucks. I use 1/4 drive and a chrome socket.

That hot shot works miracles on power strokes

The heads and glowplugs are identical on both sd and obs... The difference is in the sockets...
