2003 GMC Yukon, 5.3L with about 60k on the clock. Just recently starting making a slapping/squealing noise under load (accelerating, etc.) when the AC is on... Poked my head down there, and it appears the AC compressor is actually driven on a seperate serp belt than the other accessories, and the belt is brown and burnt looking on the non-grooved side. Anyone got any ideas on WTF?

Common noise. Its either too much resistance in the pump causing the tenioner to make a "slap" type noise or its just the tensioner.

Replace the belt/tenioner and see what happens.

Are the belt/tensioner NAPA items, or dealer only? Guess I could call NAPA but I'm feeling lazy...

Did a little research on Google - does indeed appear to be a common issue... However, most of the fixes seem to be oriented around an orifice tube and/or new compressor, not a new tensioner (ie they tried the tensioner and the noise persisted)? Any tips on proper diagnosis vs. throwing parts and $$ at it?

Yes most are the compressor (oricace tube is to be replaced ANYTIME a compressor is) but I have had a few that were the tensioner. Unfortunately you are stuck doing one and see what happens. Unfortunately some things are not cut/dry.

Fair enough... Got an inside track on where to get an affordable replacement compressor? RockAuto.com wants $275 + core + shipping...

OK, replaced the tensioner and belt, and the noise is still there. Maybe even a little worse now according to my wife  Soooooo, is the problem typically with the actual compressor, or just the compressor clutch? I spun the pulley on the compressor by hand (obviousy disengaged) and it was smooth and quiet, but I have no idea how it's reacting when engaged and under load. Just know I need to get the noise fixed before the wife trades the damn thing while I'm not looking :redneck:

Its an internal issue with the compressor....

FYI....yes, the tensioner and belt are available in the aftermarket....and yes, fairly common that the compressor fails internally...the 'slapping' is usually being caused by an imbalance issue (low compression in one of the 'cylinders'), that or it is seizing up....

Thanks for the input guys... Guess it's time to learn about A/C work...

New compressor and oriphice tube, all it better now. Except for my wallet...
