Thermostat trapped air in the engine. I use a mini magnetic "pencil" to fish the lifters. During install, someone probably got the pushrod 1/2 way into the lifter and when it pushed up, the rocker broke (happened to my 304 too) The rear part of the oil gallery could be clogged (which caused the lifter/ cam melt down) or the cam may have "walked" ahead till the lifter slid off. (cam gear gets messed up a lot in AMC V8s because of cam walk)PS: I suggest 15W40 motor oil (I run Delo if I can find the older pre CI rated stuff)
