was it one of the bottom studs? you must have dropped off the articulation ramp or a parking lot curb and caught it on the edge and sheared it or maybe the previous owner broke it a long time ago... i've never broken a stud but the bottom four were always getting the threads and nuts boogered up from scraping, hitting rocks, i started threading in cap head bolts from the outside on those lower 4. it sure is a lot easier to change a broken one or F'd up one from the outside than having to take your axle all to peices to fix it.
