A friend of mine and I have been workin' on a deal trading my beater sonoma plus some cash for his 7.3L powerstroke excursion... A few of my friends are tellin me they are a super reliable motor and I shouldn't have anything to worry about... Thing is the motor as 175,000 on it and the last diesel rig I bought was a 94 6.5 Kennedy suburban--which blew up on the way home(long story short bought it in baltimore was driving back to KS and it blew up in PA)...Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with the reliability of these motors??? He just put a new water pump on it and it's a pretty nice rig. Has a lil bit of lift bigger wheels and tars too... hitit

Thanks in advance....

7.3 Is a good motor. 175,00 is not high mileage for that motor just getting broke in. My last work truck was a 02 F-250 with 7.3 and when I got a new one it had 250,00 and only problem truck ever gave was fuel line that runs across top of engine got a hole rubbed in it. This truck had 150,00 when I started work hear and the guy that had it before me did not take care of it at all. Had like 12,000 miles since last oil change and 25,000 since last fuel filter. Also probably 150,000 of those miles was pulling 20' enclosed trailer loaded and very heavy kept it hooked to the truck 80% of the time.

Change the oil every 5,000 miles and fuel filter every 10,000 and you will have alot of life left in it

I agree the later model 6 liter had major problems with turbo hose blowing off and injector problems. They will walk off ad leave the 7.3 but reliability 7.3 is a great motor.

We've been using them here since 93'. We got a 93...a 95....and a 99. The 95 is the main workhorse.....it has 330,000 miles and the only major thing we've ever done was a torque converter somewhere in the 100,000 mile range. We change the oil consistantly but nothing else! We've put a couple glow plugs in it here and there but no injectors and whatever else I read about here all the time...hell, we never even change the fuel filter and the 95 in the strongest running one we got. The 93 and 99 have just under 200,000 with no issues at all...and again...that's just changing oil and air filter. The tranny on the 99 dually has felt like it was going to fall out of the truck at times but has been feeling that way for at least the last 100,000 miles. As far as I'm concerned the 7.3 is a fine motor.

Good to hear others confirm what others have been tellin me all along... He drives like a grandpa(at least when I'm around) so it's not been hammered on. Truck needs a programmer and some guages for mileage and towing, other than that it's setup ready to go. It's a silly good price for the truck, and it helps he wants my beater truck. I need to hold off like a month though....

I was really, really, really wanting a Tundra... but jeesus my payments would be crazy for like 60 months.. f that... I could afford it but I couldn't really save much for a house if I did do the new truck. Life's about comprimise right :drinkers:

Don't buy it and use it as a DD. If you have a car or truck that gets decent mileage keep it for DD use and get an older truck to tow rig. I am kicking myself for doing because a 4 or 6 CYL foreign car will get 25-30 mpg on average. The best any diesel will get is 19-20mpg at that is driving like an old man at 65mph on the interstate. Plus diesel is at any given time 30-50 cents more a gallon. Seriously do the math before you jump into a deal like that, you might regret it in the end. I know I am.

^ ^ ^ speaks the truth and that isn't even counting the 14 high doller quarts of oil and big ol' spensive filter at every oil change......course every once in awhile you just gotta say "what tha ****" or life just isn't worth living.

Ha, MattO you are top of it. Wife just gave me the OK to buy a daily commuter. I want a new truck as well, but thats aint happening........
I'm thinking old ass Accord or some other cheap foreign 4 door.

not a ford guy but the 7.3 are good long running motors. if you buy it, i know a guy who works at Olathe Ford. he is their #1 truck mechanic and the 4 state powerstroke expert. every ford dealer in the metro sends the **** they cant figure out to him to get fixed. he lives down by Ottawa and he does sork at home on the side for lots cheaper than any dealer or mechanic shop will do

If I couldnt get a cummins they 7.3 powerstroke would be my next buy, Those really were great engines. Actually the whole trucks were pretty good.

You do speak the truth. I work 5.6 miles from my house... And the reason I bought that sonoma was for the 4 hour drive between Hays and KC every other weekend plus goin on road trips to save gas money. Ya Kelly I'm talkin about Greg's, I don't doubt he's driven it hard sometimes, but it seems like he babies the gas whenever I'm in it. Right now Matt I'm living with my folks so it's either or, I can't have both at their house--we have too many vehicles. 3 in the driveway, 2 in the street and 1 in the garage. We will see on this deal. I really want somethin to tow 1 rig with, and it's a good price. I need to clear up some other things like credit card and payin kelly :flipoff1: before I jump into another commitment. He said he's gettin like 16mpg with stock gears and those 37's.. it's got intake, exhaust but no chip. it pulled well, but we had to do 80 when we towed down to K Rocks to keep it from kickin out of overdrive since the 3.73 gears are so off...

Somethin to think about...

Just pulled a 99 Powerstroke 250 in the shop with almost 500,000 miles on it actually had 49????. Asked the guy if he ever had any problems and hesaid other than routine mant. he has replaced a powersteering pump and alternator and water pump! Nothing done to the actual engine. Ford never should have changed motors.

Good looking rig Rob, I dig it. Don't know much about Ford's but if they commute is that close I say go for it
