How many spacers can you put on a YJ Skid plate?

Just wondering. When we did the 8.8 on Ann's YJ, it maxed the driveshaft out. Instead of her going all balls to the wall and getting an Atlas II. Or her getting the shaft lengthened, or her buying a complete SYE kit, what about just lowering the skid plate / tcase cross member some more?

She already has one inch spacers in it, what if we went with 2 inch or 2.5 inch. I could even make a spacer bar at work out of solid steel or aluminum stock. This would just tide her over until she could get the money for an Atlas, not a permanant solution.

well you dont want to go too low because it tilts your motor too. And then the fan can chew into the radiator or shroud if you run one.

and if you are going to do that, you might as well get the atlas too, so you don't have to pay twice.

Yeah that's the bummer. She could go with an SYE and new driveshaft for $400 to $500. Or she could do an atlas for around $2000 with new driveshaft.

Either way, it doesn't matter to me, but I'm not made of money.

As everyone else has already said I'd not try and lower it anymore than what it is already.

I would think you could get the rear shaft lengthened for less than $100. And that would be the most cost effective way to deal with this.

Plus on a side note, a lowered skid makes a really good anchor. I had mine dropped for about 2 weeks until my SYE/CV ds came in. It sucked. That damn thing got hung up on everything. The cheap way would be to get a new DS. But ideal fix would be a SYE/CV.

I thought of that, but the angle would still be extreme. (Past 20 degrees.) Right now it sits at about 24.

Okay so then the next question?

How long before she can afford the Atlas & why does she want one?
Why not do a JB conversions Super Short SYE for now? I know money but you can sell the t-case later. I know not the best solution but sounds like the best or only one right now.

The other idea is to do a motor mount lift as this lowers the rear output some.

Lets just all bear in mind that
1. I am not very mechanically inclined
2. I don't have my own 'shop'
3. I am financially limited right now...: mad:   darn house payment!

order from Tom woods, He has great deals on a SYE/CV kit. Then you just need to find someone to install the SYE.

The Atlas II would be the best option for her. She is in the same boat as me with the 2.5L engine, 5.??:1 first gear, 4.56 gears and 35" tires. Her Jeep can not crawl and maintain engine power. It just doesn't work. A 4.3 atlas or maybe even a 5 or 6 to one would be awesome. Myself, I'm probably going to get a 6 to one atlas for the fun factor.

We are looking for the best solution for the moment. The Tamers Rubicon trip is coming up and we need a "bulletproof" solution to get her through that. It's looking like a super short SYE, or panhandling for quarters outside the seven eleven.

Okay I didn't know she had the 4Banger.
Same as I had before. If I could ever get my buddy to come over and pickup my old t-case I would know where a SYE'd case is plus a rear driveshaft is For Sale.

I bought my SYE used along with the driveshaft. I had the 4:1 in my Jeep with 4.88 gears and had no issues off-road. But I do understand wanting the Atlas.

1. That is what friends are for
2. That is what friends shops are for
3. Trying to come up with the least expensive fix for now

Honestly that is a great idea.

I have a YJ with spring over, and 4.5" leafs, and I am maxed out with the JB conv. supershort SYE, CV driveshaft, and the t-case lowered, 2". My only option is to move the rear axle back. Since I personally will never purchase an Atlas, and seeing the dana 20 option, I would try that, or I will go with a Klune, and 3:1 NP205 for max strength. just my 2 cents
