Doing some buggy thinking, still very far out though. Anyways, how much would a used LS1 run me and what do they come in? Total price including radiator, fan, headers and any other accessories I need. Also what would I be looking at for a TH350 and then having it rebuilt and putting in a manual VB?

2500-3500 for the motor

1200-2000 for the tranny

I decided to get a LQ4 after tons of debate and research...deal with the extra 80# and have 400 horses and know my engine did not come out of a thrashed car.

I am very happy with my Art Carr TH350, got about $1150 in it shipped. Grogan is right on about the motor with everything you you are talking about. The motor will come out of a Camaro.

you'll spend 3k in the engine, now where you get it is key. if you can go somewhere and see the pull, that helps, and if the guy is cool. some of them you just get a bare motor with a harness. you'll want the first section of exhaust past the o2's, ($75 apiece) every accessory that is and isn't attached to the engine, intake system (MAF is $150ish) and everything else they'll let you grab. you might be looking at $3500-4 at that point. now, LQ4/LQ9 6 liter aluminum head from chevy truck/caddi escalade is the ticket. the problem with them is the deep pan and the tall intake/accessories. the vette pan and front acc. are where its at. if you can get that swap done, do it. get the 6 newer liter and don't look back.

Man, You can have as much as you want in a tranny. you can get away with $500 in a tranny plus the manual VB. look at a grand for someone big to build you one at the bottom of the price range.
you need a lovell, you know you do. :flipoff1:

I got a Silverado 2500 6.0 (LQ4) with 22,000 miles on it for $2200 shipped.

I paid $1300 for a throttle cable mass air sensor, fuel rail, fuel pump, computer flash, new harness, camaro oil pan and a couple of go fast mods that I will keep secret :)

Guaranteed to bring 390-400 HP and it is still stock GM for the most part.

I was getting worried about oiling and cracking the aluminum block. I just heard too many horror stories and the 80# difference is just too little to sweat.

Also, when I did the LT1 in my last buggy, finding an F body motor that has not been ridden hard and put up wet is very, very hard to do.

that' s why it was cool for heath (malvado chassis) when he got his 5.3. I had gone through it before and told him what to get. he got intake system, full exhaust out the back, fan, AC, harness, brain, steering lines unscrewed from the box and all for $1500 with 4600 miles out of an 05 (this was in early 06)
that **** that goes on top of the engine adds up quick, so its better to get it while you can
throttle cables are also nice to have intact (or if you get a drive by wire motor get the pedal and all wiring)

I got my 5.3 stupid cheap, but it had like 60K on it. I used my PS pump, it came with the water pump, manifolds, intake (which was cracked), the harness (minus the 02s), ECM, and Throttle body. 350 bux!
new intake-50 bux
starter-115
alternator-60
02's-100
belt-50
Howe Raditor-260
fans-80
LS6 cam/springs-150
milled heads/new cam bearings, assembled short block-500
EFI Live programming-100
-----------------------------------------
total 1815

the 5.3s are an awesome platform that can be had for a reasonable price...

I am really thinking about going the buggy route and I have a good idea of what I want. I was talking to Greg this weekend about LS1/TH350 and he gave me some leads on good sources. He has 3k including all engine accessories in his motor/tranny setup. Of course it did take a dump on him this weekend, but he ran in low on oil pressure and stayed in it not realizing. Anyways, I hope to get my jeep maintained and up to par for one more season of wheelin, and hopefully this time next year I will be tearing down parts to put in a new rig

That is the #1 reason I did not do the LS1.

What did you use in its place?

LQ4, 6.0 truck motor.

Weighs 80#....basically it is an iron block LS2. Has no oiling issues, won't rip the tranny out of the AL block, and it is MUCH less expensive. I have never been a hater or a huge fan of the 5.3 so this was the best bang for the buck IMO.

Of course, I posted this about 6 posts back :)

I hear that all over about the lq4/9 motors, best bang for buck. 80# is 80#, but if you don't compete, go on a diet and make that :flipoff1: hot rod mag just did a huge build up on an lq4 over the last few issues and ended up with some scary fuggin numbers. also uncle bob's new buggy is lq4 hitit
