Paid $1000 for this laptop new. It's 2 weeks out of warranty and the motherboard fails. It's a common issue that they know about and is a known problem with this model PC. Google the issue and everyone writes abotut it on the net. But they tell me they can't do anything except for replace the motherboard at my expense for $400. I can get a new one for that! I guarandamntee you the new one ain't going to be an HP!

How did you post this without your computer? :flipoff1:

I too have a disposable HP lappy and have never been impressed, but it is almost 3 yrs old....

My opinion is that they all suck. I have a Dell at work that I got brand new about 2 yrs ago. No **** I have been through 3+ hard drives, motherboards, lcds, etc. It would be considered a hight end Dell, 4gb Ram, 160GB HD, Intel Processor, etc. Total piece of ****. Wife has a dell at home that goes through batteries every year. I have yet to find a brand that is worth a ****. Thought about an Apple for the wife, but not sure if she wants to learn a new OS.

i have a gateway it does ok going on 1.5years now no problems

JJ I THINK I CAN HELP.

I ALSO HAD A PAPER WEIGHT HP. BUT I FIXED IT.
I took it completlely apart down to the motherboard.
I made a cutout in a piece of cardboard around the NVIDIA chip (to protect the computer).
Covered said cardboard in aluminum foil
Took a heat gun and heated the little chip through the chip for about 15min until the sauder underneath was soft.
I then pushed the chip down firmly.
Put some thermal compound on the top of the chip. (they sell it at RADIO SHACK)
placed a 1980 or older penny on top of the chip
then i put more thermal compound on top of the penny.
Put everything back together and it still works like better than new.

there is a youtube video to help explain, let me see if I can find it. :dblthumb:

1980 or older???? Why? LOL!

What were your symptoms? This one won't boot up. When you turn the power on it beeps non stop and the screen stays black.

In general, I agree with Matt O. though. They're all **** these days. Just buy the cheapest one you can find and don't expect it to last long.

My laptop was only 3yrs old. See if yours has the NVIDIA chip. This will work. I DID IT.
MY SYMPTOMS were it would start booting up every once in a while and then die after a few seconds. Then it wouldnt boot up at all it would just beep. I just followed the video, I know nothing about computers they say it is becuase of heat damage.

If this isnt your particular model, just look up a video on how to replace the motherboard in your model and do what I reccomended once you get it apart.

FOUND IT

Hope this helps.

HP tx1000 no boot / black screen / motherboard repair

NO PROBLEM for one of the folks that got me hooked on this sport, I couldnt believe it would work until I tried it. Dont be afraid to take that thing apart. Just be sure to use the
THERMAL COMPOUND & THE OLDER PENNY because it is pure copper not just copper coated thumb.gif.\

GOOD LUCK
Matt

I will also say to get a small extrnal HD and save all your important **** to that, that way when it fails you don't lose data. Since mine goes out like every 6 months I have gotten good at minimizing data loss.

I use a 500.00 Toshiba and so does the wife. We also use them in our maintenance shop at work for programming plc's and such. They seem to hold up good. Mine going on 3 years no issues...

Funny you should mention ... I happen to have 2 external hard drives that I made myself out of previous laptops that died. I do regularly use them as backup sources.

Use a magnetized screw driver and magnet dish when taking that thing apart. There are like a 100 screws in there.

Get old school on it. Rub a regular screw driver back & forth on a magnet and voila you have a magnetic screwdriver. :driving:

I also forgot to mention, I have another HP that woudn't turn on on a few weeks ago. Different model and older so it was way out of warranty but still a great computer. I called HP and told them the issue. They said they could fix it for $400 if I shipped it to them. It wasn't worth it so I looked around on the net and found a common issue that matched mine. It turned out to be a bad ribbon cable unerneath the keyboard. The cable was $2.50 shipped from eBay, took about 20 minutes to install, and the computer is good again. So again I say, **** HP!

I have a apple macbook pro and have had it for 2.5 years with no problems.

I have heard good things about Acer....especially their price!

I would love to have a Mac notebook, but the iMac desktop will work for now.

**** Dell
**** Gateway
**** HP

Scared of Apple and the different operating system. I have had nothing but trouble with Dell's in the past. When they went to using Bin Ladens family to do customer service I said I would never use them again. Gateway is history from way back when..... To me a fly by night Dell! HP has normally been better than the other 2 but anything can have issues. Personally Toshiba is the best in my eyes. Acer if you don't get the cheap cheap one from Wally World is a good computer. Just get the one with all the upgraded stuff.
