hey everyone, I've got a 94 toyota pickup, and am in the process of doing a SAS. Do you think it is worth it to source Hy steer parts right off the bat, or should i stick with stock steering parts for now. all i have seen is the all pro hy steer kit and it seems kinda pricey to me. I am a young father so money is tight, I just got an axle from a friend for trading work, any input would help.

thanks

the stock parts wont work. your gonna have to do some sort of crossover steering.

i know TG has one, so does marlin, and a few others.
im running sky manufacturings kit. i think its a bit more than the others aswell. but i like the fact that i dont run a modified pitman arm. and if/when a replacement is needed, i can grab one at any autoparts store.

if a modded arm gets damaged, your gonna have to wait for another one to be shipped.

altho, i dont remember reading about any failures...it might not even be an issue...

Another B'hamer eh??? Sky's kit is nice...but as Nevada said, if you run a modded pitman...as long as it's all put together properly (torqued down), you shouldn't have to do anything...not to mention the initial cost may be alittle higher, but when the TRE wears out, you just have to buy a TRE, not the whole pitman...:awesomework:

yeah that sounds like a good option, But with an axle sitting in my garage im SUPER excited to get started! haha.

would it be a huge mistake (or even possible) to retro fit a factory steering box from a early second gen and run all factory parts? the reason i ask is

1) i work at Gundies, so factory parts are easy to come by, and
2) i just want a freaking axle under my truck!

thatd be alot of work, the box mounts differently. and thatd would be going backwards. regression, not progression:redneck:
the horsehoe arm WILL break. then you're screwed.

best to wait until you're able to get a good crossover kit. it WILL be worth it.

Yeah i agree i was just on Trail gear's web site and am pumped to do it right, i would really like to get a locker soon too but thats a whole new thread ! haha
thanks for your info.

If you have access to the oem parts cheap then just buy the arms from trail gear or marlin. Use factory fj80 rod ends and make your own tie-rod/drag link. Steering and brakes are the 2 arears you dont compromise quality.

Also if your getting good deals on oem parts, get some fj80 rotors and retain you ifs brake calipers (bigger, more pistons).

:awesomework:
If you go this route, just order the proper inserts for DOM tubing (use heavy wall (.250" minimum), and cut the tube to the length you need, weld the inserts on, and put it all together!!!And X2 on the FJ rotor thing...:awesomework:

Tell Harvey Kevin @ Unlimited says Hi!!! ( I work just a couple miles from Gundies, and drive by there on the way to work occasionally....)

here is my thoughts on this, and experinces.
i am also broke!! everything on my truck has been made or upgraded when it couldnt be fixed anymore. sometimes i wish i would have known that my time, and quick fixes cost me more in the long run!
i tried to make my own crossover, hell lots of people have tried. they suck!! nothing sucks worse then being broke with no steering on the trail. you usualy ruin the whole day,and it takes alot to fix on the trail. i used to have to carry so much extra stuff in case my steering broke. this lasted less then a year. i saved up and bought trail gears kit(most affordable).
and i have never had a steering issue since... if i would have went hy-steer right away so many days would have nevr been lost. and the gf would have been happier without all the extra walking.and evry time i fixed this it cost some money.
another thing i would recomend is to save, and replace the knuckle studs... i have broke so many sets of theese, and would carry extrs to change on the trail(wich also sucks ass to do.) i saved the money, and it was hard to do,but i bought trail gears magnum studs, and havent looked back!! i still got a full set of brand new stock studs i kept for emergency. somewhere. when i first built rig these studs were not out yet. but if i would have had them i wouldnt have wasted money on stock sets, plus like above less days lost, and once again less walking or waiting for the woman.
