Hydraulic Steering assist

Why not just install power steering?

From your intro, you said you have an '87 truck, which means it's IFS (unless you or someone did a solid axle swap). Most people do full hydro or hydro-assist on their solid axle rigs when they are running larger tires (35's and above) and the stock power steering system is no longer adequate to turn them when the steering is bound up while wheeling. Not to say it couldn't be done on IFS, but it's kind of worthless, because the full hydro or hydro assist will rip apart the weaker IFS steering components and knuckles in no time.

Get a power steering pump, the brackets, and a power box and convert. It's not too hard, and the parts are readily available from one of the many people on this board who part out Toyotas all the time.

Well, for hydraulic assist, you have to at least have power steering first. The hydro assist basically assists the stock system. The stock pump is what poweres the hydraulic ram, as well as the stock steering box.

Id look into getting the parts to put power steering on it first, and if you have a stock solid axle, you might want to look at grabbing yourself an IFS power steering box instead of the stock one, then slap on a hy-steer kit while youre at it. At least, thats what I would do.

My truck is ifs Is it a easy installment.

Not hard at all and reqires zero fab work---just parts replacement with correct parts...

This reminds me, I need to get an IFS box for my truck so I can get hy-steer, and swap PS onto my Dads truck with my old and spare parts :D

Oh, and heres what I can think of you will need off the top of my head...

PS Pump w/pullies
Brackets to hold pump
Lines
PS cooler (goes in front of radiator)
PS Box
Fluid reservoir

Am I missing anything guys?
