so got home for R&R today and i opened up my boxes. one of which included a rebuilt 86-88 steering box. it has a couple of soft plugs for power steering i'm assumeing. so my question is did i order the wrong box because my truck doesn't have power steering, or are all 86-88 steering boxes taped for power steering. most of all i'm trying to find out if i can still run the box without power steering.

Sounds like you got the wrong box. You may be able to use it by looping the lines for the box so that nothing gets in there, but I would say you want the power steering anyway. You might as well keep it, and add the power steering to the truck. Makes driving off road a TON easier. My Dads 83 has stock steering with no power steering, and its a PAIN to drive off road even with the small 31s. My 84 has power steering with hysteer, and it turns WAY easier off road, even with the 37s. Just my opinion though of course. Im sure others will chime in.

so if i was going to add the power steering do i need a different head? i remember hearing or reading somewhere that rigs with power steering had a different head because of where the power steering pump connects to the head/block.
