Installing Gears

Has anyone ever done this themselves? I have plans on investing in some 4.88s, but I've never taken any of my vehicles to any shop to have people work on them - I'd really like to be able to do this myself.

Is this something feasible for someone's who's pretty good at wrenching under his car, or should I just say eff it and fork out that assload of extra cash to the shop who'll do it right?
 
i say do it yourself. its not too difficult. you should be able to do it just fine. maybe read up about it first so you have an idea. then you will know how to do it the next time when u get even lower gears.
 
my vote is do it yourself.. if you are confident with taking stuff apart,and putting it back together.
i never thought i would do my own gears,but i did!!!
its not that hard just time consuming.. research it here ,alot of people have done there own...
if you ask around when you are ready someone might even come over and give advice..

All depends on what your time and parts are worth. I have done my own in the past but anymore the thought of being "that guy" on the trail who just gernaded a $600. locker $200. worth of gears and now has to get out on one drive axle scares me enough that I just have someone that really knows what their doing do it. unless you already have the tools count on another couple hundred for a used dial indicator, magnetic base. calipers ect. For me I make more working then I would save doing my own gears so its a easy decission anymore. Theres quite a few guys on here that are good at it and dont charge what a full shop would just sidework money that pays for the toys :awesomework:
 
Depends on the axle. some are easier than others. if it's a Dana i recommend taking it to someone with the proper equipment (case spreader,setup bearings etc) 14 bolts are probably the easiest followed by ford 9 inch and toyota. do your research and decide if you can handle it because if you screw it up your out a lot of $$$
