Rear Dana 60 axle seal is leaking. The vent tube was never venting. I literally drilled through two pieces of metal to let it vent. Put it back together and vents properly. Turns out, the easiest place to vent, passed through the outer seal and backed the bolts out. Short story long, I kept tightening the bolts and eventually they stripped out.

I pull out the axle shaft, bought a new seal. Went through 6 out of 8 holes retapping them. On number 7, i should have taken a break. I lost balance and sheared the freaking drill bit off in there. Well, to make matters worse, I tried drilling through the drill bit which did little to amaze. Then, in my infinite wisdom broke off a freaking easy out in the broken off drill bit. I wish I was drinking or smoking or something, because this **** can't happen to normal, sober people.

Can I just grind the damn easy out flat for the day and run 7 bolts for now? Any other thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Pull the hub off and take it to a machine shop and get it fixed (or anyone with a mill, or hell even a drill press, and cut the broke off junk out with a carbide endmill)

Or go to the junkyard and get another hub

You'd feel like a dum dum if you sheared 7 bolts on the trail.

No, I am a dum dum and would probably do just that.

I tried originally to no avail. Think I'm taking it to the machine shop this morning

broken drill bit, tap, or easout the only thing that will cut them is an EDM drill or a cutting torch. I have tried everything else listed above and they don't work

I have no luck getting broke exhaust manifold bolts out. I have broken extractors off and had to pull heads and take them to the machine shop. They always get whatever fixed and charge me like 25 bux. I'm not telling them, but I would pay way more than that. :dblthumb:

Get another hub or a whole D60.

The 14 bolt I bought to build my cab truck had oversize bolts installed by the PO (must have previously stripped out the stock ones), but a couple of them were stripped out because the bolts were too short to get reasonable thread engagement. I just bought another entire 14 bolt for the hubs, then sold the housing and kept the shafts for spares.

Without walking outside and looking at my 60, can you drill and tap another bolt next too the broken one? If so that's the path I would take. Or just say **** it, put an extra 1/4 turn on the existing bolts and run the bitch.

Sometimes you can take a good center punch, and just break the E-Z out and/or drill bit into small pieces that can be fished out with a combination of pick, magnet, and air pressure. (Most cutting tools are brittle)

If they wont break up or are too small to get a center punch in there, I have used the small 1/8" carbide cutters in a Dremel to cut out the center of a few. Takes a little while depending on how deep they are, but is definitely an option.

Re:

Wish you were closer man. Studs suck sometimes also, I used to pop them regular when I ran a D44 with high steer.
