I would like a tow rig, but with where I live and commute I don’t really want to daily drive it so I was thinking of getting something old that I could pull out when ever I needed to tow my junk and leave at the house the rest of the time. As such I don’t really want to spend a lot of money so was thinking of an old truck.

With that in mind does anyone have an opinion on how an older Jeep J-20 4x4 would do towing? There’s one on craigslist with a 360 V8 and Auto Trans that I was thinking about getting. I know I wouldn’t be pulling the passes at 85 mph like you diesel guys, but I really wouldn’t mind that. I’m mostly concerned with safety.

They are a good rig as long as it doesnt have a quadratrac t-case. THey are uberbad on gas tough. My dad had a few of these when I was growing up and they are thirsty! Other than that good solid rigs. If I were to go the route you are going I would find an 80s f250 with a diesel in it. they arent turbo but get decent mileage and can usually be had for cheap.

If you want a J20 pickup I have one with a 401 V-8, rebuilt tranny & new tires. It needs some work but before I bought my Dodge this is what I was going to use it for. PM me if your interested and I can send you some pictures. The engine needs to be resealed as it leaks oil and the carb might need to be rebuilt. I only drove it from Wenatchee to my place in Cle Elum. Then got busy on building my TJ and put the truck to the side.
