Buddy of mine is shopping for a new 4 door JK. He's an avid wheeler but is having a tough time with the transmission choice. I've heard the new V6 dosen't have strong idle speed grunt like were used to with the 4.0 inline 6.

In your experience which trans is better for low range crawling behind the V6? He dosen't commute in traffic so on-road manners are not a concern to him.

I went with a 6 speed rubicon 4:1 low in transfer case and unless you are in low range it is fairly easy to kill the engine.....auto would be better if he is not going with a rubicon

I test drove both the 6 speed and the auto and went with the auto. No regrets. I expected the 6 speed to feel more peppy, but didn't really notice any more responsiveness. Also found the 6 speed to be pretty sloppy shifting.

The 3.8 does feel like a dog though. I have the Rubicon with the 4.10 gears and can't imagine what an X or Sahara is like with 3.07 gears.

My sister in law drives a 4 door JK with an auto and it's pretty gutless. However, it does get the job done. She drives all the way from Phoenix to Moab, all over Colorado, and it's dead reliable. She wheels it a little here and there also.
