well my daily driver (1982 datsun 720 pickup) has been rattling and making noise since i got it. the majority of it sounds like it's coming from the valve area. and cyclinder #3 is fouling out plugs, looks like oil is pooring down the cylinder. it also has a really bad hesitation between 1k till 3k rpms... it's only a 4cyl and the gas mileage sucks. my real question is can the majority of these problems be just bad valve adjustments, valve seals, or should i just rebuild the whole engine...

my plan is to get it working right and then sell it. before i come back to washington. so i just need to get it running better, not perfect. thanks.

It sounds like that ur number 3 cylinder may have fried the rings. Does it blow out blue smoke??? u shold be able to hold u ear close to ur motor and get a good idea from where its ticking. It sounds like ur rockers maybe lose and ur seals are bad or both. I rebuilt my honda motor like 4 months ago it was doing the same ur describing hesitation fouling plugs and ticking. I installed new rings, new valve seals and valves, springs, and retainers, and new rod bearing pretty much a cheap motor refresh it was like $250

should of just fixed the subaru...... cause i'm in the process of fixing that too. but i need to get a hub and some stuff from washington... so i can finish... so it looks like i'll be reringing/sealing/rebuilding and selling the pickup... got to get my car up to par first, then i can tow my quad on my trailer... at least the subaru engine is a fresh rebuild from ccr.......

i already have 3 subaru's... just one here, one in oregon and one in washington... need to get rid of a few...

Do a compression test on #3 (then the rest) first to see if it's a dropped valve (I've had several with this issue) otherwise it could be a weeping headgasket between 3 and 4 or cracked cylinder head. Could also be a bad intake valve guide moving with the valve.
Carbs on these love to clog up (I cross #1 and #3 plug wires with the extra coil disconnected so it will backfire and clear out the jets)
