Has anyone ever made a really large media blaster that could be used to blast frames and body panels? Or does anyone have a link that i could do some reading on.
I figure there should be a fairly good way to build one that is not too expensive.

Thanks guys for any help.:awesomework:

Do you need a few parts done or are you thinking of starting a side business?

On the down side:
I don't think building an enclosure will be cheap. Also, to do large components you will need a huge compressor and equipment or it will take hours and hours to finish the jobs.

You may want to reconsider hiring it out. There is a production sand blasting shop in Marysville that has done work for me: it is super loud and dirty work. They must pay those guys well.

I have done large pieces outside on the lawn. Pick a day its not raining and just let the sand fall in to the grass without trying to reclaim it.

Does anybody keep in contact with Charlie Kahler?

The last time I ran into him (probably 7 years ago or more), he had just picked up an engine that was converted to be an air compressor. I think it was a Ford 351 that was running on 4 cylinders, with the other 4 plumbed to pump air. It was mounted on a little tow-behind trailer with all the gear for sand blasting. It put out ~20cfm at 90psi or something like that.

He was talking about starting up a small side business doing blasting jobs, but I lost touch with him when the old 4x4NW list died.

I always thought it was an interesting idea, and not terribly hard to do I guess.

if ya planning on doing it commercially there is more to think about. you must capture and dispose of all the waste as hazardous materials unless you have it tested first. all dust must be contained and filtered.....

i deal with commercial blasters everyday. but on the other side there is a ton of stuff for this industry.

the large vacuum system is the loudest and most expensive.

good luck, ill be needing a chassis blasted soon, was just gonna con one of the companies to do a little side blast job but id rather do it legit, and not risk my job.

Well I am not trying to start a side business but between my friends and I there are 3 FJ40's that we could use to blast the frames and other things.

I have used the smaller cabinet style ones and they seem simple. Looks like i will have to get my google on...if i find some stuff out i will post a link.
