Have never owned a diesel before, much less a Ford pick up. Can anyone point me to the weak points in this truck that I sghould pay special attention to when I'm checking it out tomorrow morning?

Thanks

i know nothing about the mechanical issues with the diesels Jay, but i have an 86 ford van and the rust is slowly eating it alive.
be ware of any bubbles you see in the paint. i had one forming around a side marker light, and when i pulled it out and started sraping the rust away, i eventually had a large hole in the side of my rig.

Auto or manual? How many miles? I have an '87 F-350 XLT Lariat, T-19 4 speed. Glow plugs, easy to replace, but they do wear out. Wiper governor on the intermittent wipers is a known bad, the wipers just stop and restart, or only work on one setting. The moisture seperator. Injection pumps and injectors. Block heater is probably burned out. All are really just wear parts. Mines at 257K. I did the clutch once, the injection pump and injectors have been replaced once, but they are due any time ($800 in parts). Axle seals on the rear axle, another wear part. Pretty much a bulletproof truck, as far as I know there aren't any lemon parts, but by that age things are worn. My stepfather ordered this one from Ford, he used it to commute to San Fransisco Bay, he was an engineer on tugs.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't ask about mileage and the guy on the phone didn't seem to knowledgeable about the truck other than it was his daily driver for a year up until three months ago. I'll see it tomorrow morning, and maybe have a new tow rig.

If you end up getting it and want a little more power, I have an ATS turbo kit for sale. Send me a PM if you're interested.

The 6.9/7.3 seems to be a good motor. I've had a 7.3 van for about 12 years and it hasn't had any major engine issues. Couple vacuum and lift pump failures are about the worst so far. Mine doesn't see a lot of miles, though. I've read on some of the diesel websites that cylinder wall cavitation can be a major problem if the right coolant additives aren't used. Apparently it's more common on the 7.3 due to the thinner cylinder walls. Check out the IDI section on www.thedieselstop.com for some good info.

Sorry, I ended up with a '92 4x4 3/4 ton 'burban with a 454 under the hood. Price was right and I don't think it'll have trouble haulin the Jeep on the trailer. :awesomework:
