Ls on propane.

I need someone to talk me out of running a LS on propane.

I already have the propane system in my rig.
I believe 300ish Hp would be adequate for my needs.
I have a sneaky suspicion my current sbc is about to spit something out the side.

I did mine because I was on a short time schedule and had too much other stuff to do as well. I'm very happy with it so far. If you're not looking to make a lot of extra power (but still have a more power then a 350) then I'd say the only reason not to is to not have to mess with the tanks. I'll keep running it like this and if the day ever comes when I get out and wheel a lot more often then I do and I just can't stand the tanks anymore then I can sell the carb intake and MSD to a hot rod guy because there's quite a few that convert them over to carbs on old school rods and I saved my harness and computer out of the donor truck and I'll get it cut down. Until then I feel like it'll amuse me just fine for awhile.

We have put together and sold a lot of propane kits for LS engines. They work great and just like any other engine make it easy to maintain and run. You can get 300+ horsepower out of an LS engine easily but more important is you can make more torque easier. Torque is what gets you moving and is more important than horsepower and that is where propane outperforms gasoline. Engines produce more torgue on propane.
 
Eddy, its honestly personal fuel preference. I never could stand the smell of propane. I hate riding behind a rig on propane. I would hate to know that if I ran out of fuel way back in the woods, I couldn't siphon a little off my buddy's rig to get me out. Which I am used to the huge parks, not the small parks like you are finding a lot of now. I come from the Tellico days and my home park is Windrock and the next is Harlan. So I am used to being royally screwed if I break down way back in the woods. By the time you spend the money for the carbureted intake and crap to swap an ls over, you could have just picked up an rci fuel cell, fuel lines and a pump and be going already and not have to find somewhere open to get propane for those last minute throw the rig on the trailer and go type trips. If you need any advice or just need to know what something costs just shoot me a text. I will be more than happy to talk you out of propane.
 
I had propane on a rig in 2006- 2007. I used it cause it was cheap. It was easy but filling bottles is a pain in the ass. The cons definitely outweigh the pros for me. Heck selling the propane system and tanks could put a pretty large dent in purchasing a 5.3 from Pholmann.
 
Buy an out of date propane tank weld in a filler neck and return line use the original pickup line. run fuel and return lines were your propane line is right now. If using a return type fuel rail on the LS put a 1990 300zx TT fuel filter inline. Sell the propane setup to fund a cut down harness and retune on the ecu

It'd be easier to fit a fuel cell. Plus, why would you limit yourself to a 8 gal tank?

Propane drives me nuts. If I had access to my own fill station and about 6 good tanks, it wouldn't bother me. I could 100% not use it on a 6 or 8 cylinder rig though. Two propane cylinders on the Sami will last 3 days or more, if I remember to actually fill them up.

I know nothing about propane, but I am guessing more HP's from the LS is going to eat more fuel? Higher revving quicker equals mashing the skinny pedal more too booyang . Its just hard for me to get a full grasp on how much fuel is actually being consumed. I am sure there is some good info out there, but my experience tells me that as soon as I think I have it figured out. I run out of propane.

Guaranteed to be cheap at the Winnebago dealer. I just bought a little linkage thing for the electric step on mine and it was a hundred bucks. :eek:

the only reason is the OP the rig in question already has propane
 
So here is how this question came about:
3am can't sleep..

I need a new power steering pump,
Which means
I need a krc pump,
Which means
I need to switch to a serpentine belt.
Do I want to put money into my old Sbc
If I do that I should do a LS
I will need an adapter for my Trans
I just get an auto if I go LS
My transfer case won't bolt to a t400
I need a new transfer case....
 
With the amount of time you have to ride, I would put money into the easiest fix. Put a good set of tires on it first. Once the engine starts to go, then put in the auto, transfer case and LS all at once. All of this thoughts was mind spinning at 3pm :flipoff1:
 
If you like your 4 speed you can keep it behind an ls. It's nothing more than the proper flywheel and clutch assembly. Ls will already have a serpentine belt system and it'll come with a new power steering pump. Tires are definitely a must though.
 
Agreed, I think if you had some awesome shoes it would probably change everything. I know it did on my old rig. I went from a juggy with 42, to a juggy with stickies and it changed everything 100%. Just my 0.2c

And you have a buggy, so I couldn't imagine.
