Ok I don;t have much experience with manual hubs. So bear with me.

On automatic hubs they have a large spring inside the hub. Is that spring necessary on manual hubs?

man now I'm getting conflicting answers. Some people are saying no you dont need it with manual and Jobless is saying you do.. Anyone have an exploded diagram of a bronco hub with Warn locking hubs??

I've seen it go both ways---Almost all chevy manual locking hubs have the springs, but in fords, I don't recall seeing them---If I find out otherwise, I'll let you know....

In my opinion, no

and the reason why is that the outside cover bolts draw the hub out against the outer holding ring anyway. It is sandwitched solid and if you are using the inner snap ring (You should) it will draw the stub axle out against the inner seal too. There is no need to duplicate things.

I've run them both ways... as long as you have the snap ring it doesn't matter, IMO. I think I have them in right now.

BTW, if you need a set of springs, I think I have some kicking around somewhere. Send me your address and I can get 'em to ya if I find 'em.
