I am from small town Iowa, and last year we were hammered by a tornado, F5 I believe. Town is doing great and rebuilding like it never happened.

Then I get the call that my as well as thousands of others kids Football coach, teacher, athletic director, town icon in some ways was shot in the new weight room by a former student this morning. Rumor is he was shot several times and life flighted where he has passed away.

Words can not say how much I respected this man and how much I looked up to him when I played football, on and off the field. My thoughts and prayers go out to his Wife Jan and his two sons.

He was our coach for 37 years and had a career record of 292-84. He led the Falcons to 19 state playoff appearances and two state titles, in 1993 and 2001.

RIP Ed, you will be sorely missed by so many that loved you

Dang I hate to hear that. Kids these days are just I don't know how to explain.
I always looked up to my coaches from T-ball all the way through high school football and baseball. They may make you mad but they was just pushing you to get you to your full potential. Loved all my coaches and I had great parents but my I give alot of my credit of what I am today to my coaches. They also help you figure out what respect is in your teenage years.
So sad his family and friends are in my thoughts

Correct, he was a father figure to a lot of kids, taught us respect, teamwork and work ethic. Playing the game was just part of the learning and growing up.

Loved that man and like many others will miss him dearly when I see that football field

That is horrible. Too many kids these days do not have a bit of respect for anything.

You can blame the kids to some extent but the parents of said kid need to get looked at equally.

To many parents these days fail , I see kids that my daughter runs around with and attends school with and I shake my head. Society has let parenting skills slip big time.

VERY sad news.................not enough ASS WHIPPINS anymore ,

hell here in GA. ,teachers can,t even paddle students anymore, and thats BULLSHIT !

No idea is the shooter is younger kid or an adult. Just know "former student" vague since he was part of the school for 37 years. lol

Sorry to hear about his sudden demise Bones. Sounds like he must have had some responsibility in shaping your life as well. You think this stuff usually only happens in big cities stereotyped as being rough areas like Detroit or L.A., but when it happens in sleepy little town like yours, it hits home with much more impact. Once again, sorry. G :indianajones:

To say this man had an impact on my life is an understatement. I saw clips on ESPN, CNN, NY Times online, all over the net and national news. This man deserves every bit of praise he is being given from the media to the people who knew him and truly loved him. I rank him right up there with my father and grandfather for teaching me a lot as a kid and turning me into a man. Heck maybe more so than family in some cases, you just had to know the man to really get where I am coming from I guess.

Rumor mill is already stirring and his son may be the next head Coach....how's that for a family dynasty in the making???

Unfortunately , this is how legends are made. They are not born, they are earned. Your a lucky man to have known him as he was you. Hopefully his son will be able to carry his torch in memory. :indianajones:
