Narrowing housings/shafts?

Ok, so as far as actually measuring for cutting the housing and ordering custom shafts...

Is it as easy as subtracting the amount cut from either side?

I have a fullwidth chevy, 69.5" WMS to WMS,
I would like to go to 64" WMS to WMS
I currently have 61/62" WMS to WMS, so essentially 1" wider than current.

So if i have it cut down 2.75" on either side to get my 64" WMS to WMS, do i do the same(subract 2.75" from the inner shafts length) with ordering the shafts, or is there some other way you guys suggest?

I was thinking, have the housing shortened to the proper width i want, assemble the outers with the outer axles in it, put the carrier in, case open, and measure from the center of the u-joint on the outer axle to however far into the carrier the axle needs to engage. Is there a tolerence amount i can be off on my measurement, I mean, if it's a little short, will it still be ok, i know they slide back and forth a little due to turning, but i am just curious...???:eeek:

I have always taken all the length out of 1 side and left the other side stock so you only have to do 1 custom axle. you can get Alloy USA custom cut axles through NorthRidge4x4, ask for Dave 1-360-340-0282

Ok, so just one side then, so what will that do to my diff? Push it "inward" 2.75", correct? That does make sense to only do one side, I might do that...

I was planning on doing custom Alloy USA shafts so thanks for the source!, how long does it take them to make one? I will need a complete set then... custom longside shaft, stock length short side and the outers...:eeek:

cut the side that will move your center section toward the direction you want it to go.
if you need it more passanger side, cut that side... ect
i got mine in 2 weeks for the inners. my 60 outters are taking more like 6 weeks for some reason

Ok, I think I might have both sides cut to keep the stock passenger spring perch location, also keeping the pinion in the same spot(in reallity . where it is, move my drivers side in an inch (30.5 perch to perch on my truck) I checked the price of having two custom shafts made vs jsut one on a website and it's the same price... so i think i might just do both, plus they have a 10 year no questions asked warranty on them...

That being said i think i will have both sides narrowed, I just need to know how i am going to measure for the shaft lengths now...:corn:
