Little bit of backstory.

In 2010 I started a job that was going to be a career, worked my way up from a fork truck driver to sales and was cross training to become and operations manager next year when the current one retired. Earlier this year another company came in and bought the company i worked for out. The buying company was a bastard to work for so 5 of us jumped ship and went to another company in the same industry. Long story short they promised us all sorts of **** and promised me money and to be able to continue on my career path and have fallen flat on almost all of it. I'm starving worrying about paying bills, eating, or having gas money. SO, I said **** it and started looking for other opportunity. Well I found one. It's commission based sales in a completely different industry. I've never done sales like that. There is a ton of potential though. I talked to one of their salesmen and he will bring home 130k this year. The sales manager said the average salesmen will bring home 50-65k. I'm 27 no family or kids but i do have a house to pay for. Do I make the change or try to strong arm this company into more money? I have until tomorrow to decide and let the other company know.

Doesn't sound like you will be able to have much headway with your current job... sounds like making the change would be the best case to me. If you can't say "I'm happy with my current job" and it won't be much of a pay cut, I say go for it. As for doing something you have never done before, like many successful people on here have told me in the past, the best thing they ever done was take a step outside their comfort zone in their career. Long as you ain't rockin' a ballin' house and have managed your finances well, $50k-$65k should be a very comfortable annual salary given your circumstances, especially for startout pay.....most average engineers start out at $60k, fyi....

I wish I could vote both. I would give the current company an ultimatum, with 4 hrs to decide. If they can't help you out then go elsewhere. Sounds like things are tight as is so you might just end up in the same situation, hopefully not worse but at least you can say you tried it. Good luck either way.

No family, no kids, makes it easier to make a move like that. I'd say go for it. From what you have told us, it doesn't sound like your current employer will make good going forward.

27 and no kids, I say go for it also. You really don't have a lot to lose and possible great upside. FYI, in todays market and economy no company is ever going to give a rats ass about you. You got to take care of number one, that is for sure what the businesses do.

always remember who you work for. It aint the company that signs your check, its you and your family (if you have one).

Sounds to me like moving on would be best for you cause theres opportunity there, but none where you are currently.

Good luck..

Been there a few years ago when I was your age...now is as good a time as any to make the change. If anything, your notice of resignation will show how your current employer truly cares about you. Mine was digging deep to keep me and I just told them sorry too late. 3 years later I'm in a much better place and have a much stronger resume because of the change. If you are unhappy now, make the change for you. If you don't like the new position, screw it, you're young and can find something else. Sometimes the career or company change will open your eyes to what you really want to be doing.

I'd say do it, I'm 31 and single with no kids and left a good steady job a few years ago to try some new things and I couldn't be happier. I really like my current job but I'll always have my eyes out to better myself. Youre at a prime spot in your life to be employed because you're old enough to know some stuff but not to old to not still be able to learn new things.

X2

I agree with the rest. Take a chance and try it.

Be sure to give the current company a notice and leave on a positive (as possible) note. Just INCASE things go south at the sales company.

X2 never burn a bridge.

Switching careers was best thing I've ever done. But burning a bridge was the Biggest mistake I made in life.

Re:

27 and no kids, take the sales job!

Sales is awesome if you don't mind travel and living in hotels.

Your expenses are covered, so you pocket even more money because you aren't buying groceries and gas every week too.

Easy way to stack some cash, build retirement, or just get some **** you want.

But if you plan to get married and have kids, being gone all the time gets old and is really hard.

FYI
I worked sales for 4 years, then took a $12k/yr pay cut to take a job 5 miles from home after I got married and such.

When you took the current job did they give you a contract with the potential gains? If so take it to a supervisor and ask what gives. If no contract, it sounds like time to move on. If/when you take the sales job get the job in contract form for advancement purposes. If they try to shaft you, you have it in writing and cant hold them to their word or take it to lawyers and see what happens.

Dad bought into a timeshare years ago and another company bought the timeshare with big aspirations. Luckily he had the big aspirations in contract and the owners had to refund every penny since they didnt follow through with their talks.

Awww sheeiit. You done f'd up son! J/k lol. Good luck

ha. I told them about it yesterday gave them til 9 this morning to get their heart right and have it in writing and they couldnt (said i made to much as it was) so i said said alright shook their hand and went about my day. Since i'm not going to a competitor I told them i would stay and help with the inventory prep coming up.

I think you did the right thing. I made several career changes early on when I had no kids/wife and only a house payment. I am very much glad I did because once you start a family you can catch yourself caught in a bullshit job not able to leave because of mouths to feed very quickly. Just keep in mind with sales you live what seems like your regular pay. There may be times your knocking down big numbers but, keep in mind that can change due to market so stay grounded on your expenses and you should be fine. Good luck with your new job.

WTF, You quit a job?!? You know how many people would love just to have a chance at your job!!

Just joking, good luck. If you are like me, you will lose some sleep this week. It's just part of it. If you don't make moves in life that scare you, you might as well be dead.
