I am planning to go to the Hammers In 08. I want to go sometime in the fall ,August -September. I really don't want to go when there having a big event. I would like to hit a couple of trails on the way out and a couple on the way back. I am looking to take off atleast two weeks. Anyone on here is welcome to go with. I need to know the best time of year and if anyone has any connections that could show the group around, or any other good info.

Talk to Nolen, but I bet it's hot as fawk around then. I am hoping to be out there if possible next year on the bike. I will hit the con for sure with booger weldz.

Aug-Sept equals hot as the devils ball sack. I'm down though for say Oct. You be rolling through on I-10 or up north on I-20? I'll meet up and pull with ya. Hit Farmington, Las Cruces, Durango on the way or back???? Or maybe some of that crazy Arizona ****.

October sounds good. Yah I'd like to hit some of the Arizona trails, man they look inviting. I could hit I-20 going out and I-10 coming back. I think I want to hit road 51? in GrandJunction.

Hmmmmm........where to start.

October. Don't go a day sooner. That place is miserable before that. I have been twice, once in the spring and this past fall and the fall was nicer, but in the spring, the trails are less stacked because the winter rains wash out the trail.

Plan on wheeling out there during the week. There are lots of guys that will show up just to show you around. I can make some "E" introductions.

From Alabama, the only good way to go is I-20/I-10 all the way to Palm Springs and then turn North. It was 1800+ miles for me from Jackson one way. I made it out in 2 days.

Possible stops on the I-20/10 route are: Las Cruces (1 day max) and Phoenix (2-3 days) Phoenix has 3 good areas to wheel. I can get you hooked up with heinz57 and Azrkcrawler for a good time there. Plan on wheeling on the weekend in Phoenix and during the week at the Hammers. The trails the BTG guys run are semi-secret so there is no traffic on the weeknend but the Hammers are crowded often time on the weekend so I suggest planning 3-4 days during the week. You can hit everything in that time as long as you stay in one piece. My group did the entire Hammers/Phoenix trip without any breakage.

Here is my trip report: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=623454

Figure 3-4 days out and 3-4 days back. That is a week of driving and a week of wheeling. Pretty much gives you time to do Phoenix and the Hammers. If you think you can/want to squeeze in more I would consider Clayton OK, Farmington or Moab, but I think your plate will be full with the Hammers and Phoenix.

That's some good info. Your drive out, was it a nonstop switch drivers or did you drive as far as you could stop and rest drive out? I've been to Moab and Farmington so AZ is looking like a good stop. I will definitly hit you up on your contacts as it gets closer to October. Randy Morris is going so an October trip will help him get his buggy together.

Drive and sleep. We did not switch out drivers an keep going on the way out. On the way back we did that.

Long MOFO of a drive.

Man it would be awesome to go out there. I wish I was able to get off work for 2 weeks. I am sure Timmie will go, he is always talking about it.

Sometimes you have to just take off and go.
I talked to my buddy that goes on long trips like this with me and he wants to hit Independence again, and maybe Farmington. The last time we went to Farmington we ended up on the lake with two girls in a jet boat. The two girls on a jet boat trumped the wheeling.

Well if you do Colorado, then you will have to miss the Phoenix stuff. But hey, I LOVE Colorado too.

OK, 1-10/20 all the way to the Hammers.

Swing back through Colorado and hit Montrose ( 1 1/2 days), Penrose (Carnage Canyon) and then Independence last. That route sets you up perfectly for a return through Clayton or Hot Springs.

Dont miss Montrose if you go to CO.
