anywhere theres a roof over the tools...
a while back i had bought a 1985 chevy s-10 blazer with a 2.8L in it i belive. it had an auto trany that was torn apart and in pieces in the cab. after buying a rebuild kit, and relizing i had bitten off more then i could chew[and that not all of the parts where with the transmision] i scrounged up 200 dollars and sent it off to a guy that dose transmision repairs for a living, and he hooked me up with all the missing parts for free and handed him the rebuild kit. he ordered what was needed, and just asked i payed him the 200 for labor. gave us a NEWISH torce conveter and filled everything with oil. and we went and picked it up. brought it home, and tossed it back in the blazer hooked the transer case up, then drive lines. and every thing else required.

well, since we had it up on stands. we desided to make sure everything worked properly while in air[not the smartest idea but to lazy to let it down to test it.] so the rear wheels spin in drive reverse, freely in nutral, and in low and mid range gears. we desided, lets check the t-case. and shift it 2 four high, rear wheels spin but not front. tried reverse, nuthing but rear wheels. and go threw all the gears like this... with no different results. tried in 4 low also with the same results.

then we said screew it. my friend needed a ride home, so we jump in it. and we are about half way between my house and his house. a good 25-35 miles away. and loose all power to the rear wheels. so put the breaks on, and put it in park, and putting it in park holds it in place, and we open up the hood and crawl around under neath, and its draining oil from the front of the tranny.

after these problems, i returned it to the original owner, with a rebuilt trany and a new back window. just told him to take it back and not to expect the rest of the payments i owed on it.

now that im looking for a new vehical, the guy still has the s-10. and hasnt done anything to it. im sure he would sell it back for cheaper, and throw in a second s-10 for a bit more[ the second s-10 is missing passenger window and has carb problems]

so my questions where. what would cause the transfer case to not work in 4wd but work in 2wd. or was in the front gears?

and the tranny dumpin the oil like that is probably just a seal right?

I'm not too familiar with the S-10 transfer cases, is it vacuum accuated or manual?
Which tranny did it have in it, was it the stock replacement or an upgrade, and did you make sure that all the connections for your tranny cooler and vacuum fittings were installed/tight?

Hey you bought it , now own it.

You screwed him over once already, you think he will do it again??

Well was the front driveshaft even turning??

Could be a seal, also could be a cracked torque converter hub.

There are so many different problems there could be. But it doesn't look like you have the time to fix it....so I dunno what to say.....

On the 4wd issue... most of those blazers have a vacuum actuated disconnect on the front axle. If you didn't hook up the vaccum lines right on the transfer case, or didn't hook them up at all, the front vacuum actuater would never engage the axle.

On the leak... you need to figure out where the leak was. It could be the cooler lines, could be a seal of some sort, etc... could be lots of things. Figure out where the fluid is leaking out and fix it. Fill it back up and try again.

Check that first. It will isolate the problem to the front diff or the t-case. No spin=t-case issue then follow Matt's advise. If it wasnt making odd grinding noises from the front im assuming the front drivetrain is ok and its just not engaging like Matt said.

the only thing i can rember was... it like DUMPED the oil out... so i dont think it was one of the lines not being connected properlly....

and the fact that we didnt bother looking underneath at the driveline, cause it was about 10 oclock at night in late winter so it was cold out... and we where tired...

but i will look into it more the next time im in darrington.

and i have plenty of time to work on a car or truck... come on... i go to school 4 hours a week... and im waiting for some stuff to get my D.L. so i can start working again...

If you like the smaller chevy blazers/trucks. get one with a 4.3L.
Im not a big fan of the 2.8.

its a 2.8 blazer. you should be happy that you managed to get rid of it so easily. :looser:

Im not a big fan of the 2.8.

and im not sure about the motor specs on the second on second blazer.

when i was looking at www.s10v8.com it claims that you need to buy an extra part for their v8 conversion kits, if your truck or blazer didnt originally come with the 2.8...

i may have changed my mind due to all the bad rep that the s-10 blazers have around here... something nice may come up some time soon. but i might have changed my mind on the trail rig all together, as ive found a 1972 chevelle ALMOST my dream car [its not the SS version and my dream car includes the SS badge....] so i may pick that up for a nice rebuild for now, and sell it or trade it later on for something 4 wheel drive or simply give up and settle for the regular old chevy chevelle... ehh i dont know yet TO MANY DANG CHOICES!!!

I can solve your problem. Buy mine.
(see 1980 toyota in for sale section)

But yeah, stay away from the 2.8L.
Don't put a v8 in an s10 blazer and expect the rest of the running gear to hold up. If you want to stay with the chevy brand, You'd be better off getting your hands on a full size blazer. Or if you wana go compact again, find a toyota, or a jeep. Something with a solid front axle...

I dont know if you know but a 4.3L is not a v8, in fact it probably one of the est V6 engines out there its a Vortec motor! I would find one with a 4.3L throw a turbo 350 behind it, along with an Np205 or a doubler setup:awesomework:
