Wtf is the snap ring for in the tail housing?

It doesn't hold anything together or on as everything is held in with other snap rings.

I omitted that cocksucker and see no difference in performance of the T-case.

It is recessed into the housing itself and looks like it rides on the rear most bearing, but that is already held on by the a snap ring on the output shaft itself. There is a little cover that you remove to get at it, but I can't for the life of me figure out why it is there.

Anyone know what it's for?

could it be to hold the outside of the bearing into place in the tailshaft housing? the inner race of a bearing is usually held onto a shaft and the outer race is usually held into the housing...so to speak.

if i could look at it id be able to determine but engineers usually dont design something that is not needed.

That could be it, but when we re-assembled the T-case the groove in the housing did not line up with the bearing anymore. So I just omitted it and it seems to work fine.

The snap ring wasn't that strong anyway. It just held the bearing in place.

If it goes away or starts to make funny noises it won't take long to put it back in if I had a good set of snap ring pliers.

If you don't have that snap ring in place, the brng will likely move around, and wear out the tailshaft housing or possibly the back case-half--->my .02; I'd put it back in there....
