So what all would it take to put one behind a '91 Chevy 5.7l v8 then to a NP203/205 setup???

As in what year/model trans. should i look for? I am just tossing around the idea of a manual....:eeek: Is this even a good route to go? I want to still have plenty of street capabilities, but I think it'd be a little easier to maintain and work on than my 700r4 (even though they are fairly simple...) Plus what is the strength of these like?(comparatively to a 700r4)
Any and all flamage is welcome as usual:corn:

I was just checking advanced adapters to get a START, and I noticed there are a couple year differences, and I remember from reading about the NV4500 a few months ago that there are a few variants...

There is also the chev and dodge versions--not sure on the differences. Myself I wish I would have ran an NV4500 in my rig when I built it...

The major differences between Chevy and Dodge are the input shafts and the 1st gear ratio.

Advance Adapters has all you will need, you can also try JB Conversions.

ok, looking at the prices too it;s not too bad, for a brand new box it's about the price to have my 700r4 completely gone through (compared to the price of a NEW 700r4 vs a NEW nv4500)

So you guys think it's worth it? I am kinda at that stage, where I could VERY easily do this... I have been contemplating the strength and "integrity" of my 700r4, don't get me wrong it has seen some abuse and held up very well, I just have some lingering concerns about the aluminum housing and putting in BIG dual cases....:eeek:

I perfer the automatic no rollback when climbing but it has drawbacks as well .....can't push start....possible to cook it on extreme vertical climbs....I kicked the idea of a NV4500 for a bit had one for 2wd but sold it due to not being able to find a bellhousing for bigblock chrysler when i built my rig. They are nearly bulletproof

so what are you running now?

I know it's not a big issue, but i do have a tranny line leak, I just dont want to be tearing it apart after a week of driving and having split the tranny in two from torque, I have yet to come up with a mounting system I feel comfortable running, I just feel it might be a better setup in the long run. I would have to reinstall my clutch pedal, no biggy, a part of me is starting to sway....:corn:

I think this might be the kit I would need to do it, since I recall the 203 having a 27 spline, I would just need to confirm HOW it was bolted...(ie. 4 bolt pattern or 6 bolt pattern) I would need it to bolt to the 4 bolt pattern since that is what I have, but I'm sure there are different adapters to go on the np203 also...:corn:

i am running a automatic 727 torqueflight with 203/205 like you have my trans tailpiece is cast iron or steel not aluminum

Ya, I alos think it might be easier for maintainence and mounting the crossmembers up to, plus i think i's just feel better personally know it's Iron/Iron/Iron/Iron ....and not.... Iron/Aluminum/Iron/Iron :redneck:

Can never have enough weight :haha: A few other things i am thinking might be a plus are that my gas mileage (albeit it low already) will improve some, better shift control, the low 1st gear is prolly just as low as my 700r4 is. With the doublers 5.13s and the low gearing in the nv4500 that would be a nice crawl ratio i think:cool:

Any opinions on this? My money is in your hands people :redneck: :corn:

If I were to do this, I don't think i'd screw around trying to find a used one, I'd just buy new and that way i KNOW it's good plus it'll have some sort of warranty and also the adapters... Would anyone think there'd be any clearance issues with having my d-line drop on the driver's side? As in, hitting the slave cylinder/linkage/etc.???

What concerns are there about putting bigger cases and higher gearing behind the transmission. I would assume that this would actually reduce and impact forces or shock loading back to the transmission.

ya, but it increases the rotational torque on the t-cases/tranny/engine, what I am worried about is having them flex and torque at different rates (ie. the difference in my motor mounts and crossmember mounts)

I think THIS might be the time to make this decision also, as the trans is the only thing attached to the motor, and I have yet to start redoing my crossmembers for the trans and t-cases along with have all my new goodies for d-lines....

How do these things shift(long throw or shorter throw like a car...)?

I heard one is syncroed and the other is not (chevy vs dodge) true?

I was looking around and found a brand new one for $1200, a new 700r4 is about $2200... I just had mine gone through and replaced the slipped disc and stuff so it is practically a new trans.

I am more and more leaning to doing this: (sorry if this sounds like I'm talking to myself:redneck: )

NV4500 vs. 700r4

Pros:
-way fun to drive
-better throttle (RPM) control, same for gearing
-better for downhill back pressure
-push starts
-"drive" on the starter if necesary
-no cooling issues
-

Cons:
-driving in traffic:mad:
-will "roll-back" more in sticky situations (but with dual cases(and big ponies:redneck: ) I can't imagine this being a big issues...
-I am not sure how to adapt the T-case to the back of the trans.
-Not sure how this will affect my current gearing in the diffs (5.13s) and 36" Iroks.
-I'm a little concerned also that it's going to have the shift throw of a damn kenworth truck:looser:

I am one of those people who like/accept change, I think it's just another phase, plus i think it'll make things a bit more challenging compared to the auto:rolleyes: :masturbanana[1]: I have no wheeling skills due to the auto, it practically drives itself.:redneck:

Some of the Dodge units have syncro on reverse, all of them are fully sync'd in the forward gears. Reverse synchro is nice, my Dodge has it in it's G56 and it makes 547 point turns go a lot quicker. :redneck:

:awesomework: just found this place...

http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/doubler.htm

not sure on the length i was gonna check soon enough, I believe it is shorter than a 700r4, not sure by how much though...:eeek:

But this is why I am thinking about doing it now while there is nothing built and nothing to have to "redo" in a year or so when i decide that is the route i should have gone...

Anyone want to buy a nice 700r4?:stirpot: :corn:

The one in my jeep has full syncro's forward & reverse.

The shifter throw is shorter than many older manual 4 speeds you find in trucks, totally driveable.

There are adapters for everything in regards to mating it to a t-case.

I used to DD mine on the road and in traffic...no big deal, but yes an auto would be easier.

ok, good to hear about it being more driveable... What style/make is in your jeep? Does it have the lower 1st gear?

I am thinking I might do the slighlty taller 1st gear since i have the dual cases, but i am not sure...looking for some input on this...

I emailed the company i linked above, so i will see what they say a whole setup will cost, and what it will take... I think i might just bone up and get a new nv4500, that way i know it's good and will be the right one the first time.

EDIT: and yes, the auto was definitely nice, I am just not sure it will continue to hold up to the abuse i want to put it through (ie, sitting along side the house:redneck: )
