I've got a 79 wagoneer 360 in the cj and need some carb input. The head sheered off on the bolt that keeps the throttle plate(?) tight on the top of the motorcraft 4bb carb. Now if I get over 40 mph-ish it chokes itself out and dies. I've found this isn't good on I-5. This gives me all the reason I was looking for to either have this carb rebuilt or replace it with something new and shiney.

Are the advantages of getting an "offroad" carb worth the extra money? How much more $ am I lookin at for a new edlebrock/holley/etc compared to a rebuild of my carb now? If I get mine rebuilt, are there things that can be done to make it more offroad-friendly and still stay under the cost of a new one? Am I better off just getting a used carb from Oly4x4? And just how many questions can I ask in one paragraph?

I have always had good luck with holley 600 vac secondary carbs. Keep the float level down a bit (prevents sloshing) add whistle vents and spring loaded needle seats and attach the bowl vents together and raise the vent.
Quardra-jets can also be great carbs for off road and BC broncos used to sell ones made by jet that work great. Of course nothing is as good as fuel injection but I still run a holley and will until I covert over to a GM TBI system.

Yup, I didn't understand a word of that. I don't know S about carbs. How much would it be to have someone do all that on a rebuild relative to getting a new one?

Also forgot to ask, if I get a new one, how big should I go? 650cfm? FI is in the long term plans, but there's plenty more to spend my meager earnings on before that.

ive been running a edlebrock carb, only modification i did is separate the float bowls with a rubber hose cut in half.

it works great, have had the thing running at ridiculous angles with out issue.

never had any problems with the holley truck advenger on my sbc but i think we need a bigger pic of your avatar! haha
