Parts big $ for old 80's Ford diesels?

Found an extended cab diesel not sure exact year... early 80's 4x4. Need a bigger towrig since the old chevy is to small for the whole family.

Would I regret buying an oldie? I had planned on running the gasser another year and buying a newer 0-something rig next year but hate spending that kind of money on a work truck. (my trucks get used and abused hauling steel and stuff, just added some fresh dents today.)

What about power? I'm used to a mild built smallblock and a t400, 14bolt with 4.10 gears... anything has got to do better towing $ mileage wise than than the current one.

6.9 or 7.3?

Either way it will probably seem underpowered. My truck is a 7.3, and has a banks kit and turbo on it. (original non turbo engine). I'm still probably 50-75 horse shy of a Powerstroke 7.3, but it does the trick for me. And a little less mileage than the newer dizzles, I averaged 16.2 this last weekend towing quads on my heavy ass trailer to Florence and back.

Haven't had to do any major repairs yet, so couldn't tell you on the costs to fix.

mmm.. early db2 pump, 4 bolts, allen wrench, quarter turn or so.. wala!
when were we doing this again darren?
