I've been playing around on my cad with buggy designs and researching websites, magazines, and even the comments and ideas you guys post on here  and I happened to think of a subject that I never hear anyone talk about and I really don't see anyone designing into their rigs. Driveshaft and tranny safety.....especially on these high horsepower, high reving rigs. I propellored(sp?) a driveshaft at highway speed in a CJ years ago and it cut two glasspacks completely in half and came thru the back floorboard! I've seen transmissions with shafts blown out the side along with the hot fluid. I know most racing organizations require some sort of driveshaft cage and tranny curtains and I'm wondering why I never see it in this hobby or on the racing buggys. You got driveshafts right beside your legs and trannies right under you arm with usually just a thin sheet of aluminum for protection. What say ye? Do I worry about stupid stuff? I have a hard time typing "tranny" without thinking of Bones. pepper.gif

Mine will have a section of 1/4 above the rear output yoke for just this reason. I dont want a 1350 enima

the front shaft is under Miles and he dont break laughing1

( actually there are shifters above the front so it aint hurtin anyone either ) thumb.gif

That is the **** that scares me most. Thats why my I'm running passenger side drop :flipoff1: Not my legs!

Having an armored section around the driveshaft adds weight so your buggy will never be any good.

Thought about it just not talked about it. I bought 1" dies to make driveshaft hoops if I ever get to that stage in building a buggy.

your not alone - I tried to think of all kinds of weird breakage situation and safety concerns

Those kevlar wraps that they use on dragsters and tractor(tractor pull things) trannies I imagine would hold too much heat ..wouldn't they? Those guys only run short runs. I'm thinking a little extra thickness around the tranny would be the ticket. I'm going to watch what the Carters do on the new XRRA buggy. With the rear engine setup the tranny and transfer case appear to be right under Adam's arm in those pics.
