the nut with a lock washer keeps coming loose. that last time i took the pitman arm off cleaned both the pitman arm and the threads of the steer box and used lock tight and it still loosing up.

this is on a 99 jeep wrangler stock pitman arm and currie steering system. i had a drop pitman arm but put stock one on after installing currie steering system.

do you have to use red lock tight on the nut.

thank you judd

I thought they all had castle nuts, and cotter pins.

If not maybe you could drill it, and get a castle nut, and cotter pin.

You should NOT have to use lock-tight to hold it on.

I'm wondering what's wrong..... Dunno.

But I'm posting, because I *think* that a Dana 60 pinion nut is the exact same size as a saginaw steering box's nut, and the Dana 60 pinion nuts are a 'pinch' style nut (think: lock nut)

Castle nut on a pitman arm?

There is only one thing I have seen cause this and its from the pitman arm wobbling against the splines of the sector shaft. And I have seen where the splines on the pitman were wider than the sector shaft so you would get a couple thousandths of play causing the nut to back off.

I would be willing to bet its an issue like that.

Correct me if im wrong but isnt that a tapered spline interface? Maybee somethings worn out or you got the wrong pitman arm?

Yes but that doesn't mean your going to have good spine contact. And it only goes so far(taper)

that is close to what i was thinking, wish i would have not lost my orginal pitman arm. have had the same problem with the drop and the aftermarket replacement for the orginal size.

My 6inch drop pitman arm from rusty's is doing the same.. I hear a CLUNK CLUNK sound constantly... checked it today and the nut is tight... I need to get a new one asap.. part of the reason I have not been on the trails for a bit also...:awesomework:

ok, so you are not suppose to use lock tight when installing a pitman arm.
all i have is a shitty hayne manual and it says to torque it down.

when i put the drop pitman arm the instruction with the pitman arm said to use locktight.

well maybe i will have to find a stock jeep pitman arm for my year jeep

I've had the drop arm and obviously the stock one on my jeep.

In either application I haven't had to use locktite ever.

I currently have a stock "CJ" I think arm on mine. No looseness or anything. The fawker is on TIGHT though. I use a long breaker bar and give it everything I'm worth.

had that happen to me once also, was the splines worn out. As a trail-fix I had to weld the pitman arm to the nut so I could wheel the rest of the weekend

I have see this quit a few times, I think on some of the pitman arms out there the taper is off and the nut bottoms out before the spline tightins all of the way. I make a washer that has a insdes id size that is bigger than the splines and tighten it down. This will push the arm onto the taper and make it tighter. I have changed out a few with this problem and some times the splines on the shaft get damaged. Good luck
