well i picked up an 85' runner with a 22re, the motor was rebuilt at some time and i believe the head was too. anyways when im accelerating in 1st gear it lags and then around 2800-3000rpms it just kind of kickes in like a power band. my other truck wasnt like this, and its only in first gear. is this a characteristic of a cam or something? the engine runs good but im just stumped about the "power band" feeling in 1st gear.

check the timing.
retarded timing will do that.

timing was supposed to have just been cheched but he might have been blowing smoke up my ass when he said he checked it.

Needs to have t and e jumped to cehck it correctly.
TPS has to be adjusted properly as well.

when you say jump t and e your talking about checking codes from the ecu right?

it's the same thing.
jump t-e and check timing. spits codes at the same time.
if it's not seeing idl-e the timing won't be at base.
if you rev it while jumped, it'll set the tps code, too.

or if it was installed one tooth off.
If your timing won't set right on, no matter where you put the distributor, that's the next thing to check.

No T & E label on 85, it's the round two pin connector that's supposed to be shoved into a rubber cap on the driver's innner fender.

If the timing won't settle down you have a timing guide or tensioner problem. Not sure why I never thought of this with my truck since it jumped all over the place, but that's how it is. If you set the timing where it should be and power is "off" like that, then your cam is off.

One tooth off is a lot. He'd most likely be complaining of no power at any RPM.

Not always. Kinda depends on familiarity with the engines in general, and how they're driven.... I've had customers drive the truck for a year and more, since (enter some other shops name here) did a chain/head gasket/whatever, and not notice. I had to drive it and try to set the timing before telling them it was not right....

I wasn't meaning the timing jumps around, I meant it just won't hit 5 degrees.

The round connector with 2 wires on the early trucks, over by the AFM/coil.
The one wire is o2 sensor, the 3 wire is VF and some other stuff that I forget.

Jumpering the 2 wire round one is t-e.

I'd like to see this truck in person...
E-diagnosis isn't the greatest thing in the world.

YHOu have never played with the 22r series motors have you. I used to go 20 degrees both ways when I had one with an adjustable timing gear.... Got it so it acted like a 2 stroke...

well i played with the timing today after work. i thought i had it running better untill i drove it around the block. so i came back and kept advancing/ retarding it untill i forgot which was i had be turing the point. so anyways i turned #1 to tdc and started over from there. anyways after messing with it for a bit i finally got it running like a champ, there's no lag in the rpms like before and the throttle is a lot more responsive.
theres no pinging so i doubt its too advanced, tomorrow after work im going to throw a light on it and try and get it dialed. thanks for the help guys.:hi:
