Ive never given a "two week" notice but I think Ill probably be doing so soon. Tell me what proper etiquette in the business world is on this if anyone knows.

Not doing it right now, but it looks like its a possibility very soon ;)

Tell your employer that you need to sit down with him to discuss some things. Go ahead and have a typed letter to present to him when you sit down. Give him the letter and let them read it. At this point they may or may not try to convince you to stay. They may go ahead and tell you to leave so be prepared for that. In my opinion the best time to do it is the first thing in the morning.

Needs to be in writing... keep it positive so it keeps the door open.

Two Weeks Notice meen you notify your employer in writing that you plan to leave two weeks from when you hand them the paper. Type up a resignation letter, print it out, sign it. Tell your boss you need to talk to him, present him with the letter. Like Joel said, they can take it negatively and tell you to pack your **** and leave or they can let you work out your notice. Again, do it two weeks from the day you have planned as your last day.

Yep, good advice so far. Don't list your complaints, just thank them for the opportunity. The letter can/should be really short, positive, and your goal is to keep the door open. Even if you *never* want to go back to your current employer you don't know how life will play out. It might look better if a few key people are gone. Maybe people from there will be at a third place of employment down the road.

Here's a sample letter of resignation:

Please accept my resignation as of date/month/year. Thank you for the opportunities you have presented me and I wish all of you the best of luck going forward. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

If they contact you for more than a quick question, bill them. ;D

I dig the sample, thank you.

They will want me to stay for the 2 weeks... they are having enough problems losing employee's these last couple months and are already short handed. We had 3 mechanics ( 1 lead... very damn good one..) leave last month alone

Fine line. Depends on your employer.

My job in KC of 7 years I quit to go to company B and they gave me a hefty raise, I stayed and was their bitch. Eventually I left for company C, gave my 2 weeks and they let me go, no pay, etc. Then they wanted me back so I went and after a year of BS I walked with no notice. The first two were professional, the last one I was real close to leaving a duece on the desk of one boss.

keep in mind what joel and matt said, but remember that if they DO NOT let you work out your 2 weeks notice, that you are entitled to the monies lost..

you should be paid severance at that time or be allowed to work out the alotted notice of resignation.

also let your new employer know that you maybe able to start sooner incase they tell you to hit the road . but as said before leave on a positive note i quit my job about 12 yrs ago to work for the state after puttng up with their crap for 4 months i called my old boss back and they gave me a dollar raise to come back .

That is incorrect Lou. Alabama is an "AT WILL" state. They don't have to pay. They don't even need a reason to fire you.

I concur with David. At will. If you give two weeks and they say kick it, you are out the two weeks. So its kinda good to have job #2 lined up with a tenative start date pending your leaving job #1.

In my business though, you give your "notice" and you get walked out. Right there on the spot. No, I need to go back to my desk for "X". Sorry we will have someone bring that down to you in the lobby. This doesn't mean feelings are hurt, its just the nature of the business. However, we always pay the 2 weeks, unless you ****ed us.

And as said above do whatever in your power not to burn a bridge. You never know.....what the future may hold.

Good Luck P!

Well how bout this ****....
I go to work last friday.. Work all day as usual..
Now keep in mind i'm a full time student so i only work part time.
Bout 1 hour bfore quitting time i still hadn't got paid and everyone else had.. Strange...
The big boss, attorney, comes out of his office and tells me to come in his office and shut the door...
That's never happend in the nearly 3 years i've worked there... Should have, but never actually did ;D
So he tells me that due to the recent volume of clients they need someone in my position full time.. and i agree, it sucked trying to do a 55 hr work week and only working part time..
He asked me what i would like since I had been one of the best employees he'd ever had...
I tell him that I was planning on resigning at the end of April anyway to further pursue my education elsewhere..
So he says well here, full pay till the end of april and a letter of recomendation. And if you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask...
Now give me your keys....

So. I got the boot.. But i really couldn't of asked for it to be any better... And i hated that fawkin job 98% of the time anyway... :flipper:
So i'm on paid vacation till April Ninjas...

remember full time pay for a legal bitch even till the end of April equates to not a lot...

But there'll be plenty of Refreshing Keystuns in the Dirty Thirty Pit... :drinkers:

well i'll be damned...i guess the rednecks overthere still are doing it rite...we have to jump through hoops, document, and stand on one ear just to fire a XXXXXX ahem, employee that doesn't even show up....

You can fire them without reason but you better be ready to defend yourself in court. That's the reason for all the hoop jumping and paper trail. It has been my experience that the reason for terminating an employee and the reason he gives his attorney are vastly different. Thats where the documentation is so valuable.

Oh you mean when you fire them for always being late, not doing their job, etc.... And they go get an attorney and say you fired them for being minority.
Yep thats what I should have said before.
