I Need to get my tranny serviced.

I was just curious if anybody has any recommondations as to the following

Change it myself and use Brand "xyz" (what brand would you recommend)

Have it flushed by "joes shop".. (wich shop you would recommend)

rig is an '02 CC SB superdooty with 100K on it.

I don't know if i'd do an actual "flush" i think i'd just change the oil and put a new filter in it... Not the most fun or clean job in the world, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do it either.

As far as which brand oil to use, i'd go and buy the stuff sold at the stealership... you do pay a little more, but to me piece of mind is worth it.

doing the work myself doesn't bother me at all, I do all my own work..

but this is behind the diesel, and is my Tow rig, and daily driver.. so i thought i'd ask for recommondations.

Read your owners manual, and read the dip stick... they have all instructions needed to change the oil and filter, and the proper oil level checking.

Changing the fliud and filter yourself is great but you will only get about half the oil changed go have it power flushed at a good shop. I use snow country Ford in Monroe I always ask to see the old filter so I know they changed it. :D

I have had an issue a couple times with other dealers with them filling it up to the gas engine spec which is like 4 quarts less fluid then the diesel engine spec.

this is what i was getting at,
Do you flush it EVERY time, your supposed to service it, or once every couple changes?

at 200 bucks a pop to have it flushed, the miles per $ are going away quickly.

costs me 140 for somebody to change the engine oil, i do it for 70 myself.

at 100k i wouldnt flush it. just drop the pan, drain the fluid, change the filter, and refill.

I have over 200,000 miles on my tranny and still going strong I get the flush every 20,000 or so...

You need to make up your own mind on what your pocket book can afford A cheap change now and a tranny later maybe maybe not...

I would smell the oil and make up your mind based on how burnt it smells.

THAT would be ok, as far as a flush goes. but if its NEVER been done in 100k, i would NOT start now.

Damn Yankee, Did you buy the truck new??? What's the color/smell of the fluid currently??? If it is just discolored, but not burnt smeling---I'd say it's ok to flush. Depends highly on the condition of the fluid though....

I bought it with 76 k on it, and have not flushed yet.

I think i'll take the advice of checking the oil quality and making my decision there.

If its not burnt, i'll just change it, if its burnt i'll have it flushed.

Thanks for all the input.

Id take it to the same place u got the emissions on ur nissan done. Tranny fluid should be changed every 30,000 and not just by dropping the pan and changing filter, but by flushing it too unless it has a converter drain. If its ur tow rig id be putting amsoil or another good synthetic that will keep it cooler.

how did you know about my nissan, and emissions?

that would have been max performance

u got that backwards. if its in good shape, not burnt or too nasty, a flush might be OK.

if its in bad shape, burnt and ****, a flush is a bad idea. it will knock **** loose, and clog things down the line causing major problems. possibly total failure.

well then, how the hell do you get it cleaned up?

rebuild??

but it should never get that bad in the first place. but i know, unless its in good shape, a flush can be the end of an otherwise good trans.

but im in NO way a transmission specialist.

As long as it doesn't smell like badly burnt fluid...a flush shouldn't hurt...
Pull the pan and check whether there's a significant amt of friction material (grayish sediment-like stuff) on the bottom of the pan, or on the magnet (if it has one)---a small amt is normal...if it's not terrible, go ahead and flush it. What happens if there IS a mass amt of friction material in the pan, there likely is also in the valve body, and when you flush the trans, it can potentially 're-suspend' said material allowing it to run thru the trans, this can cause valving in the valve body to hang up/stick, accelerated clutch lining wear, etc,etc.... causing problems... Pull the pan and post a pic of what you find...
