just wondering if anyone has rebuilt a steering box on a 1st gen dodge diesel.has one ton axles if that matters.is it worth it?or just buy reman.ed?
the boxes remanned are anywhere from $165 to $200....rebuild kit is like 25 bucks
i am just wondering how simple they are.....
cheers, b

I have done a few but only due to drilling/tapping it for hydro assist of due to a leak otherwise its been reman units.

Hi All:

What is the need for the re-build of the steering gearbox?

Redhead Steering Gear is in north Seattle (right by the Loew's store on Aurora Ave.) I have several friends that have bought their rebuilt 'gearboxes and are happy with the product.

Regards,

Alan

Well, the box won't hold fluid anymore, and i am sure that the time i have had to drive on it has not been good to the innards.....therefore a rebuild is in order.i got the quote back for them , and it is higher than a remaned unit.

They really are not that hard to do. Be careful what kit you get. The one I got from Napa wasn't quite right. Most of the gaskets fit, except for two. I had better luck calling the guy at West Texas Offroad and talking to him. He is real knowledgeable and will get you the right stuff.

Good luck.

Edit: That's the link I used too. Pretty straight forward.

Hi All:

The 1968 vintage Saginaw PS gearbox I used in the PS conversion of my FJ40 started leaking fluid from the front end of the 'gearbox.

Turns out that the end of the 'gearbox has a removable cap which has an "O" ring underneath. There is a snap ring which holds the cap in place.

I removed the snap ring, popped-off the cap, then took the old "O" ring into an industrial seal supplier and sourced a replacement for like $3.00

Installed the replacement "O" ring, put the cap in place, then the snap ring and the leak was gone! :D

So, your PS gearbox may not need a complete re-build.

Alan
