Mark I have done maybe 15 sets of genuin gears and I will say not a one has broken yet--but typically I didn't get as good as a pattern compared to a yukon or spicer...

Thanks guys.... so, $65 ea. for (2) sets of D44, 4.56 Genuine gears, new. He's got master installs for $110 ea. as well. Saves some money over new, but not a huge amount (IIRC).

Worth it or spend a little more and get some Yukon's or hold out for a set of cheap used ones to pop up.

This will be on the race truck, which will be abused tuff-trucking, some trail runs, and if I build it right maybe a rock-crawl or two.

No street or 'daily' use.

I prefer yukons just from my own experiances doing what I do. But your not going to be shock loading the axles like you would on the trail---go for it.......

But wouldn't the jumping in tuff truck racing be equally mean, if not worse to the axles?

it could but I don't think it will be as sever and I am sure mark will be running no bigger than a 33" tire. Plus in the race enviroment you usually don't have the agressive hookup on the tires like you would trail--now granted I have never done the race thing so i could be off base here.

i have geniune gears. i have broke 3 sets of them but if you get them from 4 wheel parts they have a life time warrenty so i dont mind them sence i dont have to pay for them anymore.:redneck:

I'm going to buy Yukon for my Ford and Dana axles for the Zuk. However my Yukon 5.38 for my stock axles are junk and keep loosing teeth. No warranty from Randy's because there so small.

I used to buy nothing but Genuine's for my toyota soley based on there no questions asked waranty. Blow em' up, go get a new set. Then after I had exchanged about 8 sets (over the course of about 6 years) they stoped exchanging them due to my lack of original recipt. :booo: I switched to Youkons to see if they wouldnt break quite as often and they lasted a little longer...

Then I realized that Toyota 8" axles suck:D

from what I understand genuine's bad reputation comes from unconsistant quality. They have probobly swiched manufacturing vendors numerous times resulting in various alloys and heat treat processes. It can be luck of the draw depending on what lot your parts came out of. The other thing I have heard is that 4 wheel parts install techs skill ranges from good to bad. no gears will hold up when set up improperly.

Go Yukon, they also offer an extended waranty for another $29.95 which will cover them for as long as you own the vehicle. Genuine will keep replacing them because they are so cheap they don't care.

Thanks guys, I think I'll pass. Basically it sounds like the saying are worth it if I have to sit out a race or am busted out on the trail just because a gear set let go... plus I then have the time and effort to reset them up.

Not worth it, I think I'll go Yukon's.
