I think most of the comments are towards being able to hit reverse from your favorite gear for whatever situation. I typically run trails and hit hills in 3rd (low range) so having it just below neutral makes it easy to bang reverse quickly instead of fighting gates.as some have said, many will trim the gates so it's easier as well
