I broke a rear ring and pinion Sunday. What brand out there is the strongest? I have broken both Yukon and Superior. My ratio is currently 5.38:1 I am thinking of changing as now would be a good time. I hit the rev limiter in drive in low range at 17MPH. I am thinking of 4.56:1, but not sure.

Atlas question: Is there any way to tell the ratio with the Atlas in the buggy. I have been told it is a 3.8, then another told me it is a 4.3.

Single Seater specs;

Engine: Chevy 383
Transmission: TH350

What say Hardline?

i dont know alot about atlas cases but i think if ya call advanced adapters with the serial number on the back of the case below the rear output they can tell ya the story on it

OEM gears if you can find the ratio that you run. doesn't matter ford, dodge or chevy. x2 on serial number

Higher gear (lower numerical ratio) will be a lot stronger regardless of brand due to greater number of teeth on the pinion. Dana guy told me there are different heat treats and tooth designs for street, race, drag race and offroad gears.

17 mph in 3rd should be a 4.3 atlas. i had the same gear...5.38 and 4.3 atlas, and th350. it was too low! you sure it was in drive? sounds like 2nd gear to me. 3rd (1:1) would be closer to 30 mph with 40" tires :dunno:

No question is was in drive, and no question on the speed as it was with my radar gun.

I will call them tomorrow, I thought that number was the date code. It is 1697.

I run Nitro Gears and they seem to hold up pretty good. Chase at East Coast Gear Supply recomended them.

hey john it was 3.8 atlas when we used in erocc and werock we never changed it.

I have had PRECISION GEAR 5.38 ring and pinions in my 44,s for 7 years now , and they have broke a TON of axles, and 2 DETROIT lockers,.....

......and every time I take the diff covers off to change the fluid the pattern on em still looks BRAND NEW :****:

And I also Hwy. drove my zuk a lot for the first three years of runnin em ;D

John, Call East Coast Gear Supply. I talked to them the other day and they are making their own gear sets now. I talked to Ryan Mulligan, he spoke pretty highly of them. (919) 672-2705

I called Altas as suggested and what I thought was a date code "1697" was the serial number. It shipped from Atlas on 8/21/01 and is a 4.3:1 ratio, passenger side drop and was set up to mount to a TH350. Thanks for that suggestion to call. Now to decide on gears.

I've used OEM, Spicer, Yukon, Superior, Nitro, and Precision gears in circle track, drag and offroad vehicles and in forty years have never had a gear failure. (I'm sure I just Jinxed myself) I know the NASCAR and sprintcar guys use cryo treating apparently with great success. That said, I believe that a good quality gearset that is PROPERLY set up should stand anything that 383 could throw at it. One set of broke gears? Who knows. Two sets? something else is going on. Poor setup, bent housing, crummy bearings, contamination? I know you don't abuse your stuff so I'd guess incorrect setup.
