Ok, so my question is thus... 1995 four runner vs 2001 tacoma.

I am talking strictly difs front and rear. What changes were made to the ring and pinnion areas if any.

Suppose I could get a good price on a ring and pinnion set for the 1995 4runner, would the gears bolt up dirrectly to my current rear dif and front dif.

I do not have the e-locker, just the stock open difs. 2.7l 4 banger stock 4.10 gearing, i want to step to the 4.56

Thanks

Gabe

Not interchangeable at all.

Front Taco is a reverse rotation 7.5, 1995 rig is standard rotation

Rear Taco is a 30-spline pinion, 8.4, the 4-runner should have a 27-spline pinion V-6 gear.

X2...what he said.

Although I have heard rumors that you can make the older gear sets work in the rear end with lots of shimming and using the older 27 spline flange...but at that point why not just do it right with taco gears since you have to buy new for the front anyways

Only if you have the factory electric locker.

And, spending the money to go from 4:10 to 4:56 is not worth the expense. Save the money for something more worthwhile.

OK, as far as I knew, the 4 cylinder non-TRD had the 8" rear. I have no electric locker.

So, do I have an 8.4" out back, that needs forward cut gears?

Unless you have a two wheel drive rear it's 30 spline 8" and what is an 8.4 never heard of one. As far as I know toy has a 7.5, 8, 9.5

8.4 is the TRD e-locked rear.

Thanks.

8.0 out back 7.5 up front, forward cut rear, reverse cut front.

right?

8.4 is one of the designations for the Tacoma/T100/Tundra non-locking rear. I usually just call it the Taco rear. It has a 30-spline pinion, 30-spline axle, and can be id'd by the bridge that runs across the carrier caps. It began in 1996 Tacoma and T100, all 4wd, and 2wd with V-6 or V-8.

and what about the L4 3rz-fe? same rear, same front as the 5vz?
Correct.

Tacoma 4wd non-elocker rears are all the same 8" design using 30 spline axles and 30 spline pinions...sometimes referred to as an 8.4" rear end. Easily identifiable by the one piece carrier bearing cap and shimmed carrier adjustment instead of the older screw type adjusters

The fronts on all tacomas are all the same 7.5" high pinion reverse cut design...at least 2004 and older...not sure bout the newer ones

2005 made a whole new change up front. No gears yet.

Thats cuz your not supposed to regear the front...just chop it out and replace with a 60 :haha: :D

Or 44, if your Rob or Mikey... :) (not baggin, just sayin)

But, for me.. It'd have to be 60 or better.

Aighta, i think I am squared away on what i need... 4.56 8.4" rear forward cut, 4.56 7.5 reverse cut.

.. and an ARB... tehehehe..maybe later.
